Vortex 4, 780m and 3D concerns

Hi gents,

Just bought a 15.6 Vortex 4 with a Haswell and 780m. Apart from having to wait a month for it, all is (after I figured out how to get the 780m running as default via the NVidia PhysX) well - it's an elegant, fabulous machine, for something so small the power under the hood is simply amazing - well done PCS.

However.

I bought a new 2013 model 60' LG 3D TV to compliment it, with the aim of playing 3D Blu-ray and games. Windows 8 says "stereoscopic 3D enabled" however no games/3D blu rays worked. (Yes I'd downloaded NVidias 3D play software)

Sooo after spending an age bouncing mails back n forth with NVidia customer services, who were surprisingly swift/helpful (in stark contrast to PCS, see below), they advised me that the issue lies with PhysX ports - there is no port for the 780 - see attached screenshot. They said that this is not configurable via their software and only the laptop manufacturer can change/set these ports.

Sooo after a couple (like 2) emails (which PCS took an age to respond to) explaining the problem to PCS....wait for it....they asked me a couple of very basic/silly questions and then literally stopped responding!!! I've bought 4 PCs from PCS and to be honest expected more.

I bought this lappy with 3D gaming/movies very much on the agenda, but it seems all this new tech is now an utter waste, at least as far as 3D is concerned. If these ports are not configurable and 3D isn't possible on the V4s (other than the dedicated 3D model) then PCS really should make this abundantly clear.

Penny for your thoughts?

Kind regards

Anton.

Did you check if your monitor supports NVidia 3d vision? What blu ray player are you using?

Yup - nvidia had my exact tv model in their database, mailed me a link to confirm it was right and advised it has recently been added to the 3d support list of compatible screens and is included in the latest 320 drivers.

Blu Ray is the default Rom model supplied by PCS - with windows 8 and a licenced copy of the latest power DVD software it should work fine.

I have the old driver (311) when I check for new drivers using NVidia control panel it doesn't recognise the 320 drivers as available. The software provided with blu ray players by PCS, as far as I know, does not support 3D movies. I am using corel win dvd pro to be able to play 3d movies. I will give it a go on my vortex later on to see whether I can get the 3d mode on.

I had the same thing mate - the NVidia control panel didn't detect the update, their customer services team sent me a link, although it's now on the website for manual download.

2D blu ray works fine and you may in fact be right about needing power DVD 11, not 10 that is supplied by PCS however no 3D games work either. However there is a work around -

if you're interested! :)

Thanks for the link but I bought the software already :) I wanted to give it a go with my 3d monitor but the vortex doesn't have a DVI connection. I tried before enabling 3d with an HDMI cable was not able to get it to work.

Ahh see!! So you've got the same problem - the HDMI cable should've worked fine then, assuming your monitor is on the NVidia list!!!!! May be worth asking them the question mate.

Although it must be this port business - PhysX/NVidia control panel needs to have a 3D compatible graphics card, which the onboard intel 4600 isn't. NVidia say there should be an option (in my screenshot) to move a display over from the 4600 to the 780m.

Hopefully we'll get a definitive answer from PCS on whether there is any way to reconfigure.

It is more to do with my monitor indicating "please use DVI to enable 3D features". I also found this:
