Vortex 3 Power Brick Whining/High pitched static noise

Hey guys,

I got a power brick that makes a strange noise, like whining sort of thing. At first I thought that this was the sound of HDD (that old static sound when computer is working hard on something) assumed that its the new noise of a new hard drive (I had my last toshiba over 4 years so thought its something new). But turns out its the power brick!

I did disconnect it let it cool and connected back to the socket but it does the noise again although in prolonged beep style.. on and off

Any ideas?

Sounds like some motor powers up and stops all the time :saddam: wth

Also there is a very humble click every second somewhere from the back of the laptop, disconnecting the brick from the laptop stopped the brick making the noise, but click from the back of the laptop is still there although barely noticeable.

Edit 3: If I select saver mode from the fn+ esc option, the whining starts again (currently not doing it) and the brick would wine just before the laptop clicks. Sort of whine-click-quite-whine-click-quite circle.

And clicky sound started few hours ago, wasn't there before :(

My power brick makes a whiny squeaky noise which changes slightly depending on the load on the laptop. I just presumed it was the transformer as I can also hear a similar whine come from every phone charger I've ever had. I think it is one of the high pitched noises that as you get older you can no longer hear.
No idea about the clicking from the back of the laptop as all I get is the noise of the fans and air escaping.

It's possible that is the dreaded hard drive click. Is your system operating fine? No slowdowns or other issues that might be caused by HDD?

Do me a favour and do a chkdsk.

1. Open My Computer
2. Right-click on your HDD
3. Properties
4. Tools
5. Check Now

Checked seems all good!

I don't think its HDD (luckily! got me worried, but check took just under an hour for a 320gb drive with 150gb space occupied)

I think Click sound is something to do with the transformer/brick.. the whine noise starts, something clicks and it stops? Maybe brick is defected although working perfectly... and its the way the laptops power adapter deals with the brick?

I think you need to replace the "power brick".If still under warranty give PCS call and explain the symptoms, they may well offer to replace the "power brick".

Ok decided to call PCS, in space of 30seconds got offered to a exchange for a new brick so that's great! Hopefully that would deal with the problem. Whilst typing this received a confirmation of RMA.

Amazing service, gotta admit! I was moaning about lack of emails informing as to where in the queue the laptop is, but for RMAs.. wow!

New Crucial V4 out soon, a 256GB Sata II for approx £100.

And the mSATA M4 is <£100 for a 128 GB.

Currently have 2 x Crucial M4 256 GB + 1 x mSATA M4 128 GB fitted.

Once the pirces of SSD fall again l will be looking to fit a 480 GB Sandisk extreme or a 512 M4.

Hi guys,

I can confirm that a few of my 180W adapters for my Vortex II/III systems make the same high pitch sound when plugged into the mains and the laptop when the laptop is not turned on. They are however completely stable as far as I am aware.
