first post here and looking for help as really very clueless and getting more and more confused.

need a new machine for watching netflix etc, doing home office work, word, excel documents, wordpress stuff and playing simulation, strategy, city building type games.

i have no monitor so hoping to use smart tv or stream to my current laptop, which works fine, just old and very under powered. laptop would also work, and be preferable, but i know they are more expensive and less powerful, hence looking at desktops. no room for a monitor and desk and back injury makes sitting at desk etc very painful.

was thinking of

Intel Core i5-8300H or AMD Ryzen 5 2600

16gb RAM

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or RX 580 (or is this overkill for what i play?)

would like SSD maybe a 250gb samsung 860 evo or cheaper equivalent

HDD no idea

and no idea on motherboard or cases or fans etc don't need anything fancy with lights

budget approx £800 to £1000

any help much appreciated, thanks so much!

I think the spec you have is very sensible and balanced.

I would suggest some changes
- faster RAM (2933MHz) It's a good investment in terms of being able to lift performance quite a bit in some uses, and while you might upgrade the graphics card, storage, or even the CPU over time, you'll ideally want to keep the RAM for the lifetime of the system.
- Different case - V200's front air intakes doesn't seem great for airflow. The Fractal Focus G is a bit cheaper and is fine. Or if you want the tempered glass and RGB LED look then the Corsair 460X is more expensive but a very good case.
- If you need a wifi card, consider the AC1200 for the option of the 5GHz band.

The 500gb SU800 SSD is relatively cheap; cheaper than either the Barracuda SSD or 860 Evo at 500gb size. A 250gb 860 Evo is actually £2 more expensive, while the 250gb Barracuda is very little cheaper than the 500gb SU800. At those prices the SU800 seems like the smart buy.

A 1TB HDD is fine. 3TB gives you more GB per £, but if you don't need the extra space and money is tight, a 1TB HDD is fine. And it's not like you can't add more, very large HDDs in the future if you need.

The other advantage of a desktop vs a laptop in the long run is that it is much cheaper. When your graphics card can't handle X new title you want to play in a few years, you can just buy another one and swap it in for a desktop. For a laptop you need to buy a whole new laptop. The desktop also has more flexibility for upgrades (e.g. storage if you decide to digitise your DVD collection and use it as a media centre). Maybe you don't own any DVDs, but the point is a desktop is more flexible for any new needs you might acquire in the future.

The think the RX 580 is a great fit for your needs. It's only £40 more than the 1050 ti but is way more powerful, and comes with a bunch of free stuff (games) as a bonus. Overspending on the GPU for vague 'futureproofing' isn't something I advocate, but £40 for almost twice the performance is a no-brainer.

thank you so much, that's so helpful!

really don't mind what case it's in as it long as it has the right fans etc. would rather it was just solid and plain TBH

i don;t need wifi and have 2 external HDD so don;t think i;ll need bigger than 1tb HDD

i've changed the spec to this now, want to be extra sure i have everything right before i hit buy!
