Hi guys,

As i have said in another thread (unfortunately no responses - i think i posted it in the wrong area of the forums. Mods please remove my last thread as it is much the same as this one) I managed to spill some water on my PC a few weeks ago. I have decided to use this opportunity to have a bit of an upgrade. I am fairly sure it is my motherboard the is damaged from the water damage, but I can't be sure that the graphics card isn't damaged as I am getting nothing on my monitor whether I have it in or out.

My current build (which was built 4 and a bit years ago) is this:

Case
PCS MAELSTROM T900 BLACK GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i5-2400 Quad Core (3.10GHz, 6MB Cache) + HD Graphics
Motherboard
ASUS® P8H67-M LX SI: MICRO ATX MAINBOARD, LG 1155, SATA 6.0Gb/s
Memory (RAM)
4GB SAMSUNG DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 2GB)
Graphics Card
1280MB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX470 - 2 DVI,mHDMI - DX® 11, 3D (Special Offer!)
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
1TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD1002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM
Memory Card Reader
INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (XD, MS, CF, SD, etc) + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT
Power Supply
CORSAIR 650W TX SERIES (TX650) 80+ ULTRA QUIET PSU (£78)
Processor Cooling
INTEL SOCKET LGA1155/1156 STANDARD CPU COOLER
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Facilities
ONBOARD GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps PCI CARD (£17)
USB Options -
6 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL (MIN 2 FRONT PORTS) AS STANDARD

I am planning on buying the following parts:

Intel Core i5 4690K Processor (3.5 GHz, 6 MB Cache, LGA1150 Socket) - £183

Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel LGA1150 Z97 ATX Motherboard (4x DDR3, 4x USB3.0, 10x USB2.0, GBE, LAN, HDMI) - £64

HyperX FURY Series 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL10 DIMM Memory Module - Blue - £27

Total - £275

I am praying my GPU wasn't damaged by the water as u don't have the money to buy i new one, but if i do have to I am thinking of getting a GTX 960 after my next pay day.

Questions:
- Am I getting good value for my money? I am pushing my budget at £275..
- If I replace my MBoard and Processor, will this resolve any issues caused by my previous processor (Sandy Bridge had issues after they were released, something to do with degrading PCI ports)
- Is my old 650W PSU going to be enough? Will it still be enough if I have to buy a GTX 960?
- If my GPU is damaged, would this potentially cause any damage to any of my new parts when I power up? I do not have another PC to test it in..

I am going to order these bits today probably so i would appreciate quick responses so I can have some comfort knowing I am not wasting money :)

Thanks in advance guys :)

Is it mainly for gaming? You could go for a skylake processor since you are upgrading. Many sites do a bundle upgrade of mobo, CPU, RAM. 650w is plenty for a 960. If you are saving up, it might be better to go for a 970 for better gaming experience. Assuming the mobo/CPU was the issue, you should be ok to use onboard graphics to if it is the GPU thats fried.

Yes, it is mainly for gaming.
- Would i see a performance increase going for the i5 6600k rather than the 4690k? they are both i5 3.5GHz and both roughly the same price..
- Unfortunately I can't stretch to the GTX970, but I wasn't having a problem with my GTX470 so I think the 960 will be great (from the benchmarks I've looked at I will see a satisfying performance increase.) Please correct me if i'm wrong :)
- I have looked at some bundles, but i generally don't get as much for my money as buying them separately. I just hope it isn't too complicated to build myself - I have done a little bit of taking apart to clean and plugging stuff back in so I am reasonably confident..
- And yes, since the water damage I get lights on the motherboard and fans working, but no life on my monitor and no motherboard beeps, and no change if i take out my GPU try and use the on board graphics. I suppose that means its my motherboard/processor that i causing the issue, but it still doesn't confirm that there isn't a problem with the GPU..

In benchmarks the skylake does perform better. It also allows for DDR4 Ram. TBH with the GPU, Pascal is out this year and there may be some price drops of current ones. I

Thanks Jerpers, i hope my GPU does still work, then I will wait and buy a GTX970 when the price has gone down a bit. My GTX 470 shouldn't bottleneck me too badly in the meantime.

after doing some more shopping around, i have managed to find a fairly good deal:

i7 4790 3.6GHz - £220
ASRock Z170 Pro4S LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - £72
8GB DDR4 RAM - £26

this totals at £323 which is a bit above my budget, but doable. I have never heard of ASRock before - anyone know about the quality?

one other question - If my GPU is ruined, will the on board graphics be suitable for some minimum setting gaming - say Fallout 4 on minimum settings? - or will i be stuck with Binding of Isaac and Bloons until i can afford a decent GPU?

Thanks,

Fallout 4 will run like a dog on onboard graphics, if it runs at all.

Figured as much.

So just to get back on track, any advice on my buying the following bits?
i7 4790 3.6GHz - £220 OR i5 6600k 3.5GHz £180
ASRock Z170 Pro4S LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - £72
8GB DDR4 RAM - £26

I will upgrade later with a GTX970 probably. I'll still be ok with my 650W PSU?

For gaming, the i5 6600k or even the non k derivative will be fine. the i7 ewill not work with the socket 1151 board, that is for skylake CPU's.
The 650w will be fine.

Thanks Jerpers. +rep for the advice.
I'm hitting the order button in about an hour - just waiting to make sure no one else has any advice. I've gone for a different motherboard (ordering from a different site) but from what i can tell it will work with everything.

Intel Core i5 6600K Processor (3.5 GHz, 8 GT/s DMI, 1150 MHz GPU, 91 W) - £200
Asus B150 Pro Gaming/Aura Motherboard (Socket 1151, B150, DDR4, S-ATA 600, ATX) - £100
HyperX FURY Black Series 8 GB 2133 MHz DDR4 CL14 DIMM Memory Module (Skylake Compatible) - £30

thank you

That motherboard is good. It has USB 3.1 for future connectivity, excellent onboard sound and cool colour effects (for those that like that kinda thing.) Hope it all works ok for you and the GPU isn't fried!

Perfect. Glad to hear that. They are on their way, so hopefully this time next week I'll have my baby back. Again, thanks jerpers. I appreciate the help.
Yes, I have my fingers crossed for my GPU. Don't want to be stuck with On board graphics for any prolonged period - theres only so much Bloons I can handle.

If it is fried, could it potentially cause damage to any of my new bits when I've installed everything?

Thanks,

There is no reason for it to affect any of your new bits, only a long shot if there is still moisture inside to cause a short. Just make sure it has had plenty of time to air to be sure.
