Upgrade or Wait for New PC

Hi there.

I am thinking of upgrading my existing desktop PC as its now c 5 years old. Could probably spend up to £500 and would appreciate advice on what to upgrade to best future proof or whether I’d be better saving my money for now and ordering a brand new PC in a couple of years.

I really only use it for flight simming and would like to boost the performance of MSFS24 as I can only really run it at low / medium settings at the moment. existing specs posted below.

Thanks in advance for your help

What resolution are you playing at?

The two biggest upgrades would be GPU or CPU.

The best gaming CPU available for that platform was the 5800X3D, but they’re not easily found, but the next best is the 5700X3D.

A 4080/5080 GPU however would easily blow your budget as they’re £1000 on their own, and a 750w ATX2.4 PSU may not be sufficient for them anyway, so you’d be looking at the 4070/5070 level (Ti versions are £750).

What FPS do you consider ‘acceptable’, as MSFS is a resource hog on the best machines if you have everything maxed.

But the GPU best matched to 1440p gaming in general (MSFS is an outlier) is the 4070 Super/Ti level from Nvidia…but it’s probably only the non-Ti that would be within your budget, and the new 5070 isn‘t out until some time in February.

With MSFS the CPU is as important, and I don’t whether an upgrade to that would free up even more frames…but it becomes very expensive, so you may want to see whether the CPU or GPU is the current bottleneck by running a performance overlay whilst running MSFS.
