Ubuysa's rules

The BSOD Doctor
Partly tongue-in-cheek and with a nod to Jethro Gibbs of NCIS, my rules of troubleshooting. Has anyone got any better ones? 🤓

1. If it's not broken then don't fix it
2. It won't get better on it's own
3. RTFM
4. Backup NOW!
5. Always suspect software until proven otherwise
6. If it's software it's usually a driver
7. If it's hardware it's usually RAM
8. If something was working and now it's not then something has changed
9. Be methodical and logical, never 'poke and hope'
10. Never mess with the only copy of anything
11. Before you change anything be certain you can get back to where you were
12. Only ever change one thing at a time (and change it back if it's ok)
13. Never assume, always check - and then check again
14. If the problem isn't where you're looking then it must be somewhere else
15. Fix the problem not the symptoms
16. If the user thinks they've done something dumb they won't tell you
17. A workaround is NOT a fix
18. Never trust third-party tune-up or fix-it tools
19. The registry does NOT need cleaning
20. There are no shortcuts to a stable system.
