Ubuntu on Defiance XS

Has anyone had success with this? I've installed 17.10 but can't adjust screen backlight or keyboard backlight even after some extensive google searching.

Someone over here has the same problem with keyboard backlighting, and also with sound on the Defiance XS:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?56888-The-return-of-Gnome

I don't have the Defiance XS, so I probably won't be able to help much, although it would be good to know if:

  1. You're using the proprietary Nvidia drivers?
  2. If "yes" to question 1, which version do you have installed?
  3. Does screen/keyboard backlighting not work in both Nvidia and Intel GPU modes?
  4. What is your kernel version?

Some things I would suggest:

  • Install the latest Nvidia drivers.
  • Switch between Intel and Nvidia GPU modes ($ sudo prime-select intel, or $ sudo prime-select nvidia).
  • Download and install the latest kernel.
  • Run: $ sudo dmidecode | grep -A 9 "System Information" and do some searching using the reported "product name".

Found this:

I believe the Defiance XS is the same as a Sager NP8952 laptop (or Clevo P950HR).

Unfortunately, it looks like you may be out of luck with the keyboard backlighting, but you could certainly drop a question to the author and ask about screen backlighting.

Problem is Ubuntu Wayland is not playing nice with Nvidia, especially the latest kernels...

I have a few annoying problems with Ubuntu 17.10 on Defiance XS:

1. Using kernel 4.13.0 - My net connection started to act weird: the pages loaded painfully slow
While waiting to load, the message: This site can't be reached appears and I get the ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED error. It loads after a while. I had times when a question mark appeared instead of the wi-fi icon.
So, I upgraded to kernel 4.14.0 same problem. I think it's a DNS resolving issue. Googled and applied everything I could, nothing changes.
Next move was to upgrade to kernel 4.14.13, the latest stable release.
2. Boom! my external monitor bye bye! I go in the display settings, only my built in monitor gets recognized...
On a bright side, the net connection is smooth.
I read that Ubuntu Wayland doesn't play nice with Nvidia, so I logged out and logged back in using Xorg. Still no external monitor...I got the option to choose what to use: Nvidia or Intel driver. Intel was selected by default. I chose Nvidia and got into a login loop. The login loop persisted in Wayland, Xorg and Unity, tried them all.
Found a bug on Launchpad where people suggested to edit grub and add radeon.modeset=0. It worked, I was able to login. Restarted and chose kernel 4.14.0 to at least have an external monitor even if the connection sucks.
I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics card (NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 - 6.0GB GDDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12.1)
3. On top of everything my internal audio doesn't work, no matter the kernel.... It only worked in Ubuntu 17.04. No luck with Ubuntu 17.10, I am using external speakers.
My soundcard: Intel 2 Channel High Def. Audio + MIC/Headphone + SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3
4. Backlit keyboard is continuously ON.... really annoying.
I am using the latest Nvidia driver, 384.111.

Great news! Well done!!!

I posted some links above about the keyboard backlighting, you could try those.

Guys!
I found a workaround for the "headphones crappy after suspend". My built in audio started working after the kernel upgrade, told you, but the headphones were impossible to use.
So first I read and followed the advice in here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/linux-drivers.806364/
So, went here , followed the steps:
https://github.com/Unrud/init-headphone
Chances are , if your kernel is 4.14 or more, you see an error after compiling the headphone script...
I had a warning: WARNING:Kernel parameter is missing: acpi_enforce_resources=lax
Ignore it and just do:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1622730/comments/3
Reboot

P.S: Don't forget to lower your volume when testing, otherwise the last sound you'll hear this life will be "front left" , lol, it's smashing skulls :)))
Will come back when I do the backlight keyboard workaround. Tried the ones in the links you posted , Mnemonic, but they don't work.

Ok so:
the most likely problem was during an power outage, 3 days ago, my SSHD was affected somehow.
This is the only reason I can think of, nothing else could have happened.
There was bad weather, heavy snow, a strong power outage and I was using my laptop while this occured.
Anyway, I never paid attention to this aspect, always plugged my laptops directly to the wall...
Learned something from this. Will always use a protective power strip or smth.
Backing things up, will use Gparted from a Live USB and will resize my SSD, repartition and add my /home to it.
My /home was on the SSHD.
Then I will leave the SSHD unallocated and that's it.
I will either replace it or just take it out, will see.

Ok, investigated more and it's definitely the fan on the down-left side.
Also the temperatures get high really quickly, I guess there might be a driver issue on Ubuntu 17.10.
Damn. How you guys manage this?

On another note: if you're asking if Ubuntu works on Defiance XS, it does, with some workarounds.
What I found to work even better is Pop OS.
Gave it a try yesterday and it fits like a glove.
You make the USB bootable device using etcher, install it and it just works.
It's amazing and a big plus for me: it's built for developers.
Plus it's eye candy.
Thought I should give it a go since it was issued by System 76.
They use Clevos too ;-)
PS: my laptop still chirps, but hope I can fix that fan problem soon.

Hey Stephen, yes, Pop OS works great on it, but that fan chirping is really annoying. Hope I can find out what's the cause.

Hi Manioa. That fan chirping sounds like a hardware issue. Would be interesting to see if it still occurs with Windows 10 (although I never install Windows on my laptops). Not sure what the dealio is with PC Specialists in regards to ripping the back cover off a laptop that's still under warranty. The other thing to consider, of course (if it's still under warranty), is handing it to PC Specialist for repair. I certainly wouldn't continue using a laptop with malfunctioning cooling.

EDIT: Actually, does it occur if you start the laptop and go in to the BIOS?

EDIT2: Also, on my Defiance II, there's a key combination to turn the fans on full-power. I think it's something like CTRL + FN + 1 (I'm not in front of my Def2 at the moment, so cannot check). Would be interesting to see if the chirping persists if you turn the fans on full power.

I didn't touch Windows since 2005, it is very unlikely to touch it now.
I am checking temps with sensors, they seem fine.
I also have a cooler master, but the left fan ( the one on the left of the touch pad runs continuously when my laptop is on and chirps).

yes

Thank you for the tip, yes but less annoying. It also tends to do the second sound ( see the second vid )
When I press the combo again, it returns to the normal state and the chriping resumes after about 10 seconds.
It's definitely that fan.

All rigthy,
Problem solved.
I wrote to the support asking if there was a way I could solve it without sending my laptop back to Uk.
They told me I could open it and identify the problem then they would send me the component that was causing it.
Opened the laptop and ran it. That fan makes the chirping sound and it stops. The other fans are still rotating.
In the right side of the pic is that solo fan I am talking about.

Removing the bottom was a bit unintuitive.
But I found a very accurate guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/sager-np8950-clevo-p950hp6-review-by-htwingnut.805339/

Removed it, opened it, put a bit of grease and now it works.
All good, I can really enjoy my laptop now :)
