Trying to install Windows 7 on my new laptop

I was first of all surprised to find a Windows 10 install on my laptop until I found that it was for test purposes only.

I have a configured windows 7 usb drive but playing around with a few things to try and get the system to load from the usb didn't seem to do anything... I then made the mistake of trying to reset system install, thinking naively that it would wipe the system off and make loading from usb easier. Now all I get when I start the system is firstly the PC Specialist logo then an error message screen with the error "Page_Fault_In_Non_Paged_Area". It also says on the screen that the laptop needs to restart, which is does automatically, but only loops around to the same screen.

I have tried to get around the system booting this by moving the flash drive ahead of the windows system in the boot setup (as I should have probably done right at the start!), but the laptop still bypasses the USB drive and goes back to the error screen.

Any help sorting the error and getting my Windows 7 OS successfully installed is greatly appreciated!!!

I don't have anything on the boot menu in BIOS whose option can be changed to anything that that specifically says "Legacy".

That wouldn't affect installation anyway.

Have you tried the usb key in another computer within windows? it should automatically boot the installation within windows.

How did you create the win 7 usb?

Secure boot is already disabled and I do not have the an option that reads "Boot list option". On the boot menu all I have is the list of boot order and a UEFI option within which UEFI can be disabled. I have already moved the USB to the top of this list.

I have also just tried the USB, created with this tool https://wudt.codeplex.com/, with my old Toshiba laptop and it loaded the installation wizard from the boot selection menu with no issues.

Ok, so it does seem that the boot order is skipping the usb as you say, at least that narrows it down.

Just out of interest, what USB options do you have? Often they specify things like usb hard drive, usb key etc etc?

It's possible your USB is not formatted to support UEFI systems, since it works in legacy mode, but not with UEFI. The tool you used, dunno how it formats your drive. You can get rufus here: https://rufus.akeo.ie/

I can't even get into the boot selection menu - pressing the F8 key when I turn on the laptop does nothing - the system just carries on to the error message screen within the test installation of Windows as described in my original post.

I meant in the BIOS

F8 is the windows boot menu, you want the BIOS boot menu which would be another shortcut.

Tried re-formatting the USB drive with Rufus as suggested in my previous post? Also, what laptop do you have? :)

Just tried it. No difference, it still bypasses it and goes through to the error message on the existing Windows test system.

The cosmos 15.6, should be based on the Clevo WS650c. Please start by downloading the system manual for that here: http://www.clevo.com/en/e-services/download/ftp_download.asp?sno=5441&no=3

a) Please try and disable UEFI completely in the BIOS, by referring to page 5-15 in the manual. It doesn't list it exactly, but I assume the option would be under UEFI Setting. This will enable legacy BIOS mode. This is fine for Windows 7.
b) If you still insist on having UEFI enabled, you have to disable UEFI Secure boot as someone else already suggested. Navigate to page 5-11, which lists the option to disable UEFI Secure boot

Also see this: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/325445-30-boot-priorities-bios - Not the same laptop, I know, but it's the same BIOS Utility (Aptio setup utility). It sounds like you might have to disable secure boot first, to be able to disable UEFI. Then use the boot-override function when under the "exit" group in the BIOS.

Strange BIOS... :/

EDIT: Doing a google search Aptio setup utility 2012, also reveals a lot of frustrated users with the same issues. There's several suggestions to get it working, but it seems this is the most common solution to get it change to legacy mode (Also called CSM in this BIOS):
"1. Enter the BIOS setup menu by pressing and holding F2 key when powering on.
2. Switch to “Boot” and set “Launch CSM” to Enabled.
3. Switch to “Security” and set “Secure Boot Control” to Disabled.
4. Press F10 to save and exit.
5. Press and hold ESC key to launch boot menu when the Unit restarts."

Pleased to report that simply disabling the UEFI seems to have done the trick and the installation process in currently running!

Thanks for all your help

The supposed better security of UEFI is nothing compared to the hassle it can cause, especially if you are dual-booting.
