Transfer rate capped at 10Mbps

Hi everyone,

I’m encountering a weird bug that is, oddly enough, pretty common with Win10 from my research on the internetz.

Setup:
- Synology NAS - DS114 with WD Red HDD inside
- Mitrastar router (the standard one from my ISP for my FTTH connection)
- PCSpecialist laptop (Recoil 2019) with:
- Ethernet card = Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller
- Wifi card = Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9260 160MHz

Task I want to accomplish: copying files from NAS to laptop over Ethernet and/or Wifi

Problem: transfer rate capped at 10Mbps, trying whether connected in LAN (disabling Wifi beforehand) or in Wifi (802.11ac, 5Ghz).
I tried with small, medium and large files.

I’m 99% sure it’s coming from Windows- or File Explorer-related configuration.
Here’s why:
- Transfer rate on Linux = around 100Mbps (LAN); best I can expect based on my NAS performance (slow ARM processor + NAS HDD performance test available here)
- Both ethernet and wifi card drivers updated to latest version through Windows Device Manager
- NAS and router both rebooted (you never know!)
- MIMO power-saving mode deactivated on the Intel wifi card (supposedly there’s an Energy Efficient Ethernet [EEE] option on Realtek ethernet cards, but I can’t find the option in the device properties…)
- Speed & Duplex set to 1.0Gbps Full Duplex on the Realtek card. No similar option on the Intel card; 802.11ac forced just to be sure.
- Router set to deliver the same.
- Internet speed tests (Firefox on Windows) shows full FTTH speed (600Mbps download). Single download over Wifi from other websites around 60Mbps max.

Solutions I tried and research so far:
(no LSO option on my Ethernet nor Wifi card though…)

Yet nothing worked so far… do you guys have any suggestion?

Thanks a lot in advance!

You say that on Internet speed tests you get the full FTTH speeds (600Mbps down)? That would suggest that there is nothing wrong with either your network adapter nor with Windows. Traffic over your home network (to/from the NAS) shouldn't appear any different to your network adapter or to Windows as Internet traffic.

You also say the NAS speeds are fine on Linux (100Mbps)? Was Linux running on the same hardware as Windows (ie. the laptop)? It might be worth running Linux temporarily on that laptop to see whether you get 100Mbps - if you do then it's definitely a Windows issue, that would be a big step forward I think. (and might suggest it's related to the application you're using)??

BTW. Until you get to the bottom of this I would stay well away from 'network optimising' tools. Even if it does turn out to be a network optimisation issue it's far safer to be making changes one at a time and testing rather than have some dubious bit of software splatter all over your system in one go.

Thank you for answering so fast ubuysa

Exactly, that is where I find myself dumbfounded...
Here is a screenshot of the internet speedtest by the way. I did not get the occasion to do one for the file copying speed so far.

Yes I ran the test with Ubuntu running live on an USB pendrive on the same laptop. I tried with 2 different CAT5e cables for the LAN connection just to be sure; same "correct" result on Ubuntu.

As you suggest I will try with another file explorer on Windows, such as Total Commander or Multi Commander (I only tried with Windows File Explorer so far).

Noted ;)

Excellent idea, let us know how that goes. :)

Well unfortunately the alternative file explorer test was a failure. Good news is I solved the problem by going for a Win10 re-installation (full SSD format)!

Umm..I'm in a fairly major provincial town in Crete and I'm getting 8Mbps, that's a lot better than those in some rural areas get. We do have fibre here (up to 50Mbps) but only in the wealthy areas and I'm just a poor retired ex-techie. [emoji41]

I feel ya brother. The world needs to catch up!

Japan, South Korea, parts of the US and even parts of the north in the UK (private companies comprised of locals) are on Gb fibre. We all need that kind of sustenance!

It probably has better internet. Speedtest and many websites assume the Yorkshire area because of Zen's static IP. Or something.

Just.... Wtf.... Where can I get Internet like yours. :(Where do you live?!

I live in a major city on the East coast of Spain. FTTB (or FTTH?) was installed in 2017 in my building, the fiber network being pretty recent here.
Though, as you suspect, you never get to fully enjoy full speed, except for some rare P2P downloading cases (not encouraging piracy though, just talking about download speed here ;) )

That's eat, clear some space, I'm moving in!
