i was originally going for a Genesis IV, but the GT650m is a lot better than the GT630m in the Benchmarks i viewed (Skyrim on high vs Skyrim on medium for example).

my budget is £850 (it used to be £750, but i got some extra work and bumped up the budget). its currently at £855 due to the extra accessories but its only £5 so i dont mind. any glaring issues or things you would change with this build?

thanks Vanthus.

im also wondering, how flexible is the Optimus chassis? how much room for upgrading have i got to play with?
ill be using this throughout University and so upgrading an existing model will be cheaper than buying a brand new one.

i dont know if your budjet allows that but i would go for 1600mhz ram since you want it for gaming.... see my spec

There won't be any difference in the ram speed. Also, the 1600mhz stuff won't actually run at full speed without tweaking the BIOS. As for upgrading the chassis, these are the things you can change. CPU, hdds (you can add an SSD later), wifi card, possibly screen, cd drive, RAM. I think that is about it.

ive noticed that the Seagate Momentus XT (Hybrid) 500GB is the same price as the 750GB WB Scorpio Black. what are the advantages that the Hybrid would give me compared to the extra 250GB of the HDD?

The advantage of the hybrid is the extra large cache it provides. It can store your most frequently accessed data. Therefore, speeding up the opening of programs and boot speed dramatically. Drawbacks are that the HDD although not bad isn't quite at the same speed as the scorpio black. Also, you lose a bit of capacity for the price. Hope this helps.

so it affects opening times, but not running performance? i assume there would be little difference between a game running on a HDD and the same game running on the Hybrid, once the HDD has spun up, correct?

The drive will only affect opening times of programs/ games and loading times. When you are actually gaming, the gpu is the first thing to generally cause a bottleneck, the HDD is unlikely to cause a bottleneck. The HDD does also effect the snappiness of the OS as a whole, everything will be a bit more responsive with a hybrid. This is because the most frequently accessed data gets stored in quick-access cache.

ill go for the 750GB HDD, i'd prefer the extra space over the increased boot times. especially if ill be storing Steam games and my iTunes library on it :)

thanks for the info +1 rep :)

it turns out the 17.3" version is only a few pounds extra than the 15.6" version.

would the 1GB of VRAM from the 650M be enough for the larger screen, or would performance suffer a lot?

Shouldn't be a problem. Both screens are the same res, therefore, shouldn't make a difference! 1GB really should be enough, as long as you don't play multiple games at once! However, if you want a true gaming laptop, you really ought to look at the vortex or skyfire series. However, I can understand if you can't afford them!

those are impressive machines, but for that budget i'd much prefer to get a powerful Desktop, which wouldn't suit my needs for University. :)

well, i accidentally transferred £870 to my parents instead of £860 (bad memory), so i was thinking of either choosing the MS Wireless Mouse 4000 or the Diamond Delivery service. do you think the delivery service is the better option given the reports from the thread about DPD, or should i go for the mouse instead? this is the last thing to decide before i order the Laptop :)

Personally, I'd go for a mouse. Simply because it can be used for a long time and is long lasting (compared to the delivery). The delivery is a very short term gain, definately spend the money on something you will appreciate later! In this case, the hardware!

diamond delivery only means pre-noon delivery, all packages are treated with the same care

aah ok, good to know. ill get the mouse. i normally prefer wired mice, but the only one was the £5 option and the MS4000 looks more comfortable :)
