I assume PCSpecialist will have them in their inventory very quickly and will be available in the configurator. I mean they got them EVO 970 Plus NVME SSDs in very fast.
As someone who needs new laptop by July, I'm in no rush, can take my time, look for alternatives, wait for sudden steep discounts etc.
But the least I can do, is to wait for intel 9000 series of processors right? I don't really see the point of buying a laptop right now with a processor from april of 2018. Sure I might save few quids for helping Intel clear out their old stock but I'm not going to do that.

So what do you think, gang

What are you using the laptop for? If gaming I don't see it'll make a blind bit of difference in 99.9% of titles tbh

Pure gaming. I think I've already made my mind up about waiting so i just wanted to get the discussion going. Maybe other people have heard different rumours. I forgot to mention but once I buy the laptop I plan to game on it for 5-6 years so it's better for me if I get something that has the most up-to-date hardware. My current laptop has been in use since 2012 and some games don't even hit 30fps on it so I know it's time to upgrade.

I think the CPU will make no difference in the overwhelming majority of games. It's the GPU that will be the bottleneck.

If you want to wait, I doubt there's any harm in it - unless prices to continue to rise as Intel's 14nm supply shortage bite harder... though even that might be partially offset by falling RAM and SSD prices.

But I don't think there's much net benefit from waiting.

Also with the jump from 7000 to 8000 series CPUs, bringing in more cores, we saw the 8000 series CPUs have more in the way of power and possibly also thermal throttling (with boost clocks) than their predecessors. An 8750H is still better than a 7700HQ, but given CPUs are already constrained by their TDP with the 8000 series, I'm not sure what more the 9000 series will really give us even if it does squidge in more cores (I've not followed closely but heard that the 9000 mobile CPUs were going upto 8 cores?).

In 4 years it's not going to be an 8750H holding you back I think. Just like it's not a 6700HQ holding a gaming laptop back as often as it would be a GTX 970M, for instance.

I'd be far more understanding of someone waiting to buy because they're waiting for the refresh of display panels to appear rather than the new CPUs. 1440p 144hz gsync laptops? Yes please.

9750h laptops? Meh, whatevs.

At least PCS are now advertising 4k gsync panels. Hopefully 1440p 144hz gsync isn't too far away.

Should be next month according to the rumours, fingers crossed. I think 1440p 144hz is the absolute sweet spot for a laptop and can't believe they (as in everyone) haven't done it sooner.

Duuuuuuude! That'd be so awesome. You gave me a completely different reason to wait now. It'll be so worth it for me because my plan is to get one of those 17 inch laptops with RTX 2070, in games with medium to high settings, it will run like a dream. Ancient people said
"All things come to him who waits as long as he knows what he is waiting for". NOW I know what I'm waiting for. i7-9750H is a secondary concern. Ideally I'll try to get the best of both worlds but we'll see.

And in gaming it's still going to be very similar performance due to being GPU bound, and GPU upgrades not being a consideration for laptops.

That's probably for the better. 8 cores would have been straight up stupid. Games don't really parallelize well so more cores would have just fried the chip quicker. And the actual improvement is as expected of Intel. It's the same figures year in year out. You'll get your 30-40% improvement and if you wait 3-4 years, suddenly you have a beastly processor coming out. Just like those videogames that are released annually. If you skip few generations, then you're looking at huge improvements
