Hey!

Recently been having a strange issue with my PC where each time I alt-tab the windows previews are scaled incorectly and the text is very difficult to read. I have also had a lot more intermittent stuttering on the desktop and while playing games, for the last 8-9 months my machine has ran pretty flawlessly and not had any issues.

To try fix this I first reseated cables/RAM/GPU, then I disabled XMP for a while, none of this helped.
I then tried a new DP cable, and tried a new monitor, both didn't work.
Latest thing I tried was my old GT 1030, this also displayed the same issue.

The bug happens in safe mode too.

Am I allowed to link a youtube video showing the issue? I can't upload videos here.

Thanks for reading.

I can recreate this 9 out of 10 times by resizing a window 5-10 mins after a cold start. If the pc has been on for a while or I've been gaming then the issue takes a while longer to appear. It's very strange.

The fact it happens on the 1030 aswell as my 7800XT (and also in safe mode with both cards) basically rules out any sort of driver/hardware issue with the cards, I think.

The X3D doesn't have an IGPU I can test with.

Forgot to add I also reinstalled Win11 23H2 via Windows UUP Dump, have not tried 24H2, as I was on 23H2 for 9 months without said issue.

It's not something I've come across myself, but I don't tend to take much notice of what's on the task-switching preview as it's usually only used to inform me that I'm in the correct app/window.

I totally understand that, but it's definitely a new thing thats started because I didn't notice it at all before (and its quite obvious as you can see in the video).

But because the PC is stable under heavy workload, such as gaming, I am struggling to see how any hardware could be at fault.

At the same time, I nuked windows and reinstalled from USB, and still have the issue, so I don't see how any software could cause it (and I don't think its a bug that's directly caused by windows, as then lots of people would experience it, no?).

How did you reinstall, what method? How did you deal with partitions for instance? Just asking as a lot of people don’t understand the difference between various install methods

I got the latest ISO from Windows UUP Dump for 23H2 (build 22631.5116), then used Rufus and installed via USB. Uploaded important files to the cloud prior and reformat/deleted all partitions on my NVME (I only have one drive).

I chose UUP Dump over windows creation media tool because I didn't want 24H2.

I have done this on other machines previously, all worked fine.

I understand using the built in "reinstall" function or whatever its called is frowned upon because a broken install will probably just reinstall a broken install, but getting the files from MS servers themselves (which is what UUP does) and installing via USB gets around that issue.

Yeah, that’s all good, no issues there.

I don’t use the function of alt tabbing at all really so can’t really comment, but it seems to be a software glitch

Yeah I thought software/windows too, its not the kind of thing hardware can cause, really.

But then again, all I have on my PC is Baldur's Gate III, AMD Adrenalin, Firefox, IntelliJ and Steam, pretty much. For the issue to persist after a complete windows reinstall doesn't make any sense to me.

Could have been a recent windows update, Microsoft have been pretty damn poor in the last 6 months.

Actually I'm not sure about that, because I use "InControl" to lock down my windows feature version. I only get security fixes etc, and when I reinstalled I did grab a later ISO (because MS do A/B testing etc and staggered rollout this version wasn't available on my last install yet), but the issue was on the older 23H2 version, aswell as the lastest one.

Is there any tests or such I could do to start ruling out hardware properly?

RAM - Tested with Memtest overnight and disabled XMP.
GPU - Temporarily swapped out with a GT 1030, used different cables on my 7800XT
Display Cable - Replaced
Monitor - Checked with a different one
Reseated RAM/24 Pin power cable/CPU power cable

Is there even a teeny tiny chance the PSU/Mboard are the culprit?

Fwiw I just closed BG3 and all the windows were appearing properly but 1 minute after closing the game it happened again.

It's not a hardware issue, couldn't represent that way, it's software.

I can only blame Windows then, as it happens in safe mode too. When 23H2 support ends later this year I will inevitably switch over to 24H2 and I'll see then if that fixes anything. Computers can be damm weird.
