Swapping from Nvidia to ATI

Hey everyone :)

Skyrim is fast approaching and I honestly cannot wait! My current Spec's are:

Phenom II x6 1055T 2.8Ghz
GTX 460 2GB
12 GB Ram 1667 mhz DDR3
650 W PSU

I was thinking of treating myself at christmas by upgrading to a Radeon HD 6950 2GB as it is almost half the price of a GTX 580. My question is this. If I go from a Nvidia card being the GTX 460 to an ATI card will I need to change my motherboard? As I read somewhere that if you changed from an AMD to an Intel processor or vice versa you need to get a new motherboard. Also should I consider upgrading my PSU to a higher wattage aswell?

If a motherboard change is necessary then I will upgrade to a GTX 560.

Thanks in advance :)

you will probably not need to change your motherboard. I have never heard of having to change the motherboard for that reason.

What motherboard do you have?

I have the same motherboard using a 1GB ATI RADEON HD 5870 PCI EXPRESS card,
with a CORSAIR 650W PSU.
I think you'll be fine upgrading to a Radeon HD 6950 2GB,
although others might say you should upgrade the PSU.

@Tom_gr7 That's the one cheers man appreciate your fast replies and your time and I look forward to upgrading soon :)

Sorry just one more thing I read this somewhere and I quote

"Just uninstall the nVidia drivers, run Driver Sweeper (google it) in Safe Mode, and install the ATI drivers. It's easy, and you will get ALL promised features."

Is that essential or could I just install the ATI card and drivers then find the Nvidia drivers later and remove them or just leave them?

Cheers

@vanthus Awesome thanks for the reply much appreciated and from what I remember PSU's are fairly cheap :)
