hi everybody,

I am going to make my very first purchase from you guys within the next 48 hours for a new powerful laptop. Still trying to put a build together... so many parts its very difficult to know what to put in and what not. I have been looking in the forums for days at reviews of recent purchases and also of people asking the mod for build advice...

Almost every single build includes: 750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK hard drive. Why not 500gb SSD? wouldnt an SSD be MUCH better and faster? Why is nobody going for a SSD? Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

Not cost effective, 500 gb SSD is going to be quite expensive . If you have the money and it doesn't mean compromising in other components go for it.

Thanks for your reply! Wouldnt the extra cost be worth it for the speed and other good things the SSD gives or is that SCORPIO BLACK also really quick and very good and when comparing to SSD the difference is not that noticeable??

As I said it depends on your budget. You can find plenty of info online regarding benefits of an SSD:

For gaming I don't find a noticeable difference, for windows yes.

The only way I would have an SSD is as part of a two-drive system, probably a 120GB for the OSs, I dual-boot, and a larger HDD for storage. As Keynes said, you will notice the speed on boot up but not on gaming. A lot would depend on which laptop you are buying, some can take two drives but on others you would have to lose the DVD drive, although that may not be a problem.

There are dual-drives which look OK but I have not seen any reviews so cannot be sure but, for certain, I would stay away from Hybrids.

Thanks for that! I cannot believe nobody thinks its a good idea for a large SSD. I just dont understand why

the SSD would also be great when multitasking like having photoshop open, with 10 browser windows, skype, and several other programs right?

From reading around an SSD can noticeably improve level/section loading in at least some games, and for me that alone would sell an SSD to me.

Your spec has a large SSD but the gtx 870m. If it was me I get a Scorpio black and the gtx 880m

As said it's to do with cost. An SSD can be added later very easily, where as adding a better GPU or CPU later is a lot more difficult. I just got my PCS laptop with the 750GB Scorpio Black in it and it's fast enough, I will be adding a 120gb SSD for windows and some base applications sometime soon, but for now I'd prefer a hard drive and a better overall system. There isn't much point getting a 500gb SSD unless you've got a massive budget and it won't compromise anything else, the SSD is mainly good for windows and base applications, no point putting every single thing on there when it won't give a huge boost in performance.
