SSD Advice

I'm thinking of buying an SSD to go in my PC. I had originally been put off getting one due to their small storage sizes but now it seems like a good idea after all.

I know that the KINGSTON HYPERX 3K is better to get than the KINGSTON V310 SSD, but that only goes up to 480GB. However the Samsung 840 EVO has a 1TB model and I know there were issues with the 840 EVO model but I've seen that there is a firmware fix for this now.

So my question is whether this means it's safe to buy a 840 EVO now, or should I get a HYPERX 3K instead? I just don't like the idea of having a 480GB drive as compared to the 1TB.

I can confirm Samsung released a firmware update that corrects the speed degradation bug, so the 840 evo range are safe and very good. I have one and am very happy with it.

My advice would be don't buy either a 480gb or 1tb SSD. Instead get a 120gb or 250gb SSD and then a large hard drive. Install your OS and frequently used programs on the SSD and anything else on the HDD.

Since some things don't really benefit from being on an SSD there's not much point getting an SSD large enough for every single file you have. Things like music and videos don't benefit from the faster speeds (or not noticeably anyway).

I was more concerned with how big games are becoming, as Far Cry 4 is around 30GB and Assassin's Creed Unity is over 50GB. I already have a 2TB HDD but a lot of people have suggested I get an SSD as well.

I think I'll get the Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD and see however I go. There's plenty of room in my case for more if needs be!

Exactly :) Just don't install games (or many) on the SSD, put them on a hard drive, since it's much more cost efficient. I have a couple really small games on my SSD and a couple frequently used ones, other than that they're all on my HDD.

On the machine I have with an SSD I have a 2TB secondary drive, all my games are installed and transferred onto that then whenever I want to play a game and need the speed of the SSD I just copy the files over to the SSD, that way I always have access to my games but they're never clogging up my SSD.

To be honest, most games don't have huge load times so I don't think it's worth the hassle, I just keep my frequently used ones on the SSD, still have 100GB free on my 250GB SSD :)

I might install GTAV on my SSD when it ever gets released... but only because the load times when switching between characters with that map zooming out and in made my ears bleed when I played it last year on the PS3.

Made your ears bleed? Was it really loud on PS3? My 360 was fine, noise wise, just took ages to load

No no, just took ages. Couldn't think of a good phrase so went with ears bleeding for no real logical reason!

Depends on the games and types of games you play, for example I play an MMO called The Secret World, if I play it off my SATA drive loading between zones can take up to a minute, if I play it off my SSD it takes about 15 seconds and when you are zoning a dozen or more times throughout your game time that's quite a lot of wasted minutes. The same is quite common with a lot of MMO's.

Yeah, certain games are awful at loading times, but most of the games I play aren't too bad, not worth using 20GB of my SSD to save 5 seconds usually, unless it's a game where you have to load whenever you switch area :p

Hmm well by the sounds of it I may only need it for GTA V then when it eventually gets released. Only other game I have that sometimes takes a little longer to load is Assassin's Creed Unity but I completed it ages ago (with none of the problems others have reported thanks to my super PCS computer! ). Saying that Dead Kings DLC is out today but I'll probably have completed that by the end of the week...or day!

GTA V was ok on my PS3 but I know what you mean about switching character!
