Just bought and collected my : Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers (it bascially has 2 front and 2 rear speakers, center speaker , base thingy ...use google images to see better). I got theese for a good bargain. My pc has the standard onboard (8.0 i think)...sound But problem is that i can only really use the 2 front speakers ... and ofcourse the base. The center speaker and the 2 rear speakers wont work, as most of sound source is 2 channel...... ... I mainly stream music from Youtube. HOW can i get the 5.1 surrond sound affect from 2 -channel stero sources ???????????????????????????? I really need help. Its eating me away fast.. thank you (in advance) and a very nice *pleaseeeeeeee*

Vanthus is right in citing the sound card.

Basic sound cards like the onboard can do 5.1 etc but the source needs to be 5.1. More elaborate and expensive sound cards can take normal stereo sources and turn them into 5.1.

Gorman. is there no software or even the sound producers own Utility (the sound card manufc , realtek?) that can do this for me????

THe logitech X-540 has a matrix mode on its buttons to do this. But ofcourse thats double price and i got my system for £35 (bargain, usually £65+).

I know most thngs only using 2 channel src - front left and right speakers only being used and ofcourse the base when needed. So..i really need to do this and use all speakers , the rear right and left and more importantly the center speaker.

:/

The only method i know of is a soundcard that supports it.

Has to be hardware really, doing this in software could kill performance on a system.

To be honest, forcing stereo channel audio into 5.1 won't compare to true surround sound anyway.

If something plays in stereo by default, such as music, there's usually a good reason for it. I have the same set of speakers and certain media players use 2.1 and others 5.1 - stereo sounds far better in my opinion.

While these speakers are unbeatable in their price range, delivering loud, clean audio; they're obviously limited and aren't gonna be able to take advantage of surround sound all that well. The rear set are pretty quiet compared to the front. Still, a cracking set of speakers once wall mounted and no other model can come close in terms of price V performance.

u got X-530 logitech speakers?????

and so they worth it? i was thinking of returning them back to comet, getting my £35 and borrowing some money to get the X-540 logitech speakers (i will have to use ££money from predicted christmas /b-day funds which is quite close, althought most of the ££ going towards the £600 PC i got from here :O).

If u got theese X-530 speakers, what dont you like about them?>

also
how are you mounting them on the wall? drilling a nail for a clip or something will just ruin my wall in the future when i move the PC upstairs etc..

I wouldn't say I dislike them - my expectations weren't high and ended up being far surpassed. They're great when recieving uncompressed audio, such as that from a Blu-Ray disc, and this brings out the best in them. When streaming media from, say, the BBC iPlayer, distortion becomes more prominent at higher volume levels; but at mid range everything's fine. Compression seems to somewhat impact performance. Overall audio is crisp and clear and outdoes some sets more than twice the price.

The subwoofer isn't as good as the one provided with the next model up, as it's front as opposed to down firing, but still does a decent enough job. It can be a bit overpowering though. And of course it lacks the matrix mode you mentioned. Some reviews report interference but I haven't had this problem. Maybe they just require a clean mains line.

To fix them to the wall I just drilled holes and inserted plastic wall pegs. The speakers have a bracket on the back that attaches to the screw. It's pretty straightforward. There may be a way to do this without drilling holes but I don't know of it.

All in all, they're a great buy.

There is no way of fixing them to a wall without making holes of some description, wether it be brick or plasterboard, trust me ive been fixing things to walls for years.

Press the button next to mute on your little control thingy ( I have the same speaker, kindly given to me by PCS ;) ) this will emulate a kind of 5.1 surround effect. (AH yes its the matrix button).
