So how are the new Sandy Bridge processors?

Do they live up to the hype? How do they perform compared to the i7 9xx range?
I've noticed that PCS are not offering them on the extreme spec computers. Is this because they do not rival existing processors?

Sandy Bridge will be followed by Ivy Bridge later this year. Sandy Bridge is the mid end of the new processor range and Ivy Bridge is the high end. For the majority of tasks (such as gaming) Sandy Bridge will outperform the previous generation though there are a few exceptions. For example, the i7-970 would be better than the i5-2500 for heavily threaded applications.

Is there a confirmed release date for the Ivy Bridge chip? How are they supposed to optimize performance in comparison into the old intel model of processor?

No dates as yet, although the best indicator is when you see me posting pics of my Ivy rig on here!

Ivy is the big chip I7 replacement, the current sandy lineup is the little chip I7 / I5 replacement.

Patience is just another word for getting old! But you're right, it's pointless speculating really. I'm just getting overexcited about PC I'm not going to own for at least another 7-9 months.

And the problem then is that by then, something else even more tasty will be on the horizon (aka the internet rumour mill) [cynical mode off]
