Having asked for opinions I asked for the wireless card to be changed to the Killer 1202 model. It arrived about a week ago and I set about upgrading Windows installing office and so on. Everything went smoothly and the fan barely spun up at all. This I was pleased about because post ordering I had seen a few threads regarding fan noise etc. I was a little shocked that it don't come with a built in DvD drive and as I hadn't noticed this I never thought to order one either. Luckily I have office on a pen drive so I did what I could do and put it away. DvD drive arrived on Wednesday so I installed the games that my son wanted and when he got home from school he tried the games out. High quality on the graphics and little issue with speed and more importantly fan noise. We had a 7gb update on another game and the wireless upgrade worked very well, consistently outperforming my macbook in download tests.
I would suggest that people go for the thermal paste upgrade, it costs so little and if it helps even a little bit it's worth it. The SSD may also be a worthwhile upgrade when it comes to heat producing items in what is after all only a small case (13.3" or so).
Things that I don't like, no drive, I've had small laptops before and they've all had one fitted and ho the power cable attaches to the laptop, again I'm used to the Apple magnetic system, if the cable snags there is no stress on the power point on the laptop as it just snaps safely off.
I was aware of the fan/cooling issues and it caused me some concern. I sympathise with everybody who has suffered this but to date I haven't, about the only time you hear the fan is on boot up, to be honest I'd expect too. Even under quite a lot of game stress the fan is barely ticking over. Ok the games my son plays may not be the latest games on the market, he plays Rome Total War and Star Craft but they are running smoothly and quickly on high graphics
Would I buy another? I'm almost certain that I will, my middle son has been so impressed with this laptop that he wants one.
Regards Andrew
