Ok cheers man. It's just that when you upgrade from the 770-780 on the skyfire it costs £228, however when you upgrade from the 770-780 on the vortex it costs about £270. Is that just PCspecialists way of scaling the prices, because it sounds like a mistake to me.
Infact the skyfire has alot better cooling and noise emessions than the Vortex.
Also you can change the msi keyboard to the US one, free of charge it seems when u are selecting ur custom components. The US one is back lit
I guess Clevo are just charging more for their Chassis......
One thing I will say is my brother owns the predecessor Chassis to the skyfire III, which has the same keybopard as far
as im aware, and I find it difficult to type accuretly on due to several keys being in different places. My brother however, who uses it way more than me
says its not bad once u get used to it, so each to his own I guess, gl picking ur build!
I was thinking something similar this morning Lobizzle, as I headed into day 14 of pre-production on my Vortex...(wipes away a small tear)... However, on closer inspection I did find 3 key differences:
Sound Card:
SkyfireIII = Intel 2 channel high definition Audio + Mic/Headphone Jack
Vortex IV = Intel 5.1 channel high definition Audio + SPDIF/MIC/Headphone Jack
Battery:
SkyfireIII = Skyfire series 9 cell lithium Ion Battery
Vortex IV = Vortex Series 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (5,200mAh/76.96WH)
Now, someone far wiser than I may be able to equate to whether these are worth the Monetary difference between the machines off the shelf (£91), but these facts did help re-affirm in my own mind I had made the right decision for me in going for the Vortex...On a pure aesthetics note I also feel the Vortex looks far superior... but that is pure opinion on my part only.
Incidently, I ran a whole load of specs with both the 770 and 780, including some 15" variations too. The price difference for upgrading to the 780 fluctuates both by machine type, size and by how many other things have been upgraded (on average the more things I upgraded on the spec the less impact changing the graphics card had on the price: Price variations in 770/780
Vortex IV 17" off the shelf changing GPU only: £241
Vortex IV 17" my spec changing GPU only: £229
SkyFireIII 17" Off the shelf changing GPU only: £255
SkyfireIII 17" my spec changing GPU only: £204
VortexIV 15" off the shelf changing GPU only: £262
Vortex IV 15" my spec changing GPU only: £251
As Keynes pointed out, You will have to check with PCS why this is exactly. All I have assumed from the above pricing is that:
A) Part of the cost is linked to the labour cost of building a bespoke machine. (this only seems logical to me)
and either
B) unlike standard PC rigs where graphics cards will fit a motherboard providing they have the right slot and therefore the GPU price should remain the same, for different laptops the price of the card may vary (supply and demand) as it needs to fit a specific motherboard layout...??? (pure conjecture on my part so happy to be corrected!)
or
C) the cost of different models carrying the relevant GPU direct from the manufacturer is different (ie. Supply and demand again and out of PCS control?)
Either way the price difference between the 2 models fluctuated in the specifications I looked at between £90 and £105. The question therefore I believe, is whether the 3 specification points above, and the pure gosh-darn-good-lookingness of the Vortex, are worth this amount?
You may have guessed my opinion but I am glad to stand by my Vortex order and look forward to day 15 of Pre-production...(and no, I wouldn't swap for the Skyfire and 3 day build, some things are worth waiting for...I hope!!
