Sky Broadband

So what do people think of sky broadband? I'm currently on talktalk which is brilliant in my area for download and just general connection but how does sky compare?

It is terrible and I can't wait to ditch it. Currently downloading at 540kpbs, never had more than 4.8mpbs. Upload has never been higher than 1mpbs.

Well, I live in the country side (Northamptonshire) and I got max down speed of 1 Mbps. I recently switched to fibre Optic and I'm currently maxed out at a download speed of 30 Mbps so it's not up bad, if you live further in town it can go up to 60 Mbps.

A switch to Sky would be going from mediocre to bad. BT and Virgin are the best choices.

it's all dependent on where you live.

if you live in an area that is overutilised, then you are going to suffer, no matter who you are with.

I am with virgin and live in such an area & the service I have had over the last 6 months is absolutely shocking, during peak hours, I am lucky if I get +1Mbs, and have even had speeds as low as 0.01Mbs on more than a few occasions, even though I was on 30Mbs, and now 60Mbs.

all you have to do is read virgin's own support forums for an idea the state the whole organisation is in.

my friend on the other hand is with sky, and he can't praise them highly enough.

I think this is the main point here, it really is dependent on where you live which defines the quality of the lines you are using and how many other people are also trying to use it.

Exactly as other's have said, it depends on where you live. I'm personally with sky and since we moved house onto a newer estate, we're only supposed to get 3mbs as opposed to the 8mbs we used to get on the other side of town. My friend who lives 3 doors down from me is with BT and barely gets 1mbs, literally he turns his 3g on to browse the web with his phone as his internet is so bad. He can barely stream 240p youtube videos.

I personally don't mind sky, obviously I have terrible speeds but that's because of my area. I only get 250kb/s max when downloading but I can't complain about my browsing speeds nor my gaming ping. We very rarely get dropouts and my fluctuant connection is usually down to me opting to use wireless as opposed to an ethernet cable.

I have no bad things to say about Sky :)

I'm used too having bad download speeds during the day though, that's how it has always been for me, I rarely download during the day though, as long as I can get a decent ping on games during the day then that's fine :L

what virgin media is like in an over utilised area:

and that is the 60Mbs package, so there is no point saying ISP A is better than ISP B & ISP C, because it's not necessarily true. it's all about where you are.

I agree with rakk, it doesn't matter what ISP you are with. The quality of the line and distance from the exchange are the biggest factors. If you can get either BT's hybrid fibre optic or virgins full fibre optic. Go for it, but if not It doesnt matter what ISP you are with.

dude, I'd well be kicking off if I was paying as much as you possibly do for virgin.

I did, they buckle to anyone who complains and knocks 50% off the bill price. problem is, where I live right now, there is no decent alternative to what I have now. my friend lives on the other side of town from where I am, so sky isn't available here, and bt infinity won't be in place until the end of this year, so I am kind of stuck between 2 rocks.

VM also tried to jip me out of the double speed offer but I gave them a load of grief about it and they put me back on the 60Mbs package, as well as a 70 quid refund for previous months of terrible service. naturally, they aren't giving the money back, but are rather taking it off the next 2 months bills

I have to echo a few others already....

I have Virgin Broadband, they are also pretty much the only fibreoptic supplier in my area so are massively over-subscribed.
I heard stories from other users about virgin throttling the connection as well (although over the past year they have replaced most of their equipment for this area and a lot of problems have subsided)

it wasnt until we upgraded from a 20mb connection to 50mb connection that we ever got reliable service.... and even then the best we get is 21mb/22mb download and about 8mb/9mb upload in speed tests (does everything we need it too and there are three different computers using the connection... but still... we have to pay for a connection twice that size just to get it)

i would strongly recommend doing a little research to find out who supplies your area and how heavily... I would AVOID sky like the plague... had them in the past and they would only supply ASDL and we had to sign up to BT for a landline to do it. Had massive problems even after install and rarely got speeds of over 8mb download in speed tests.

BT infinity seems to be pretty good atm, so i would check them out first

Before I signed with Sky, they said my line could support up to 6Mb/s.

This below is about the best I've got, it's usually around 2.84Mb/s

I just wish they were able/made to tell you more accurately what your speed would be, before you sign up.

On the plus side though, I rarely lose my connection, which is more than can be said when I was with Orange.

P.S. I wish Virgin would stop stuffing leaflets through my door offering 30/60Mbs, when I don't even have cable in my area!

I live in a village, no fibre available, I'm fairly close to the exchange though. I was with AOL for years, should have changed much sooner but couldn't find a decent unlimited deal until recently. AOL's best speeds late at night were about 5mb download, but during peak hours they always seemed to drop to like 1-2, which is useless for any kind of stream watching. Since I've recently switched to the cheaper BT unlimited package, now I get a minimum of 5mb all the time which means youtube, films etc stream fine. BT don't seem to throttle the speeds like AOL/TalkTalk do. No experience of Sky, but check BT deals for a decent option. Looks like the upload isn't that great though, if you're gonna be uploading loads, doesn't bother me.

Haven't had a pb with sky so far. I chose them because they said they would not throttle the connection, which they haven't. So the broadband throttling policy is something to look out for esp if you dl a lot or like watching 1080p YouTube vids in the evening.
I get 19Mbps at any time with my 20Mbps package.

Check your area on the ISP forums, one mistake I did before going with Virgin Media.

A high/over utilization problem has persisted for 1 year now. Online games unplayable at peak times, nor are youtube videos watchable.
Although they do give somewhat good compensation, but in my case its not about the money, I want good service.
