See, there are female gamers out there :)

Nice article regarding female gamers, I am one myself and I hope I'm still gaming at that age :)

Heh yeh I saw that during lunch today.

My issues with it however is exactly how "gamer" is defined.

The premise of the story is that by the end of the year, female gamers will outnumber male gamers? No they won't :)

Unfortunately, FB and its offshoot games for phones etc now seem to garner the same, if not more air time in mainstream media than "proper gaming".

To be cliche about it, Farmville and Angry Birds do not constitute gaming in my view :) In as much as I don't think Youtube series/films are the same as TV/Cinema releases.

Maybe i'm now part of some "old brigade" that won't change with the times, but my mum used play Columns A LOT when we had our Mega Drive in the early 90s...would I call her a gamer? Hell no!

There are plenty of female gamers (not just Rakky), and I just think it almost does them a disservice to all of sudden recognise female gaming, simply off the back of cheap and cheerful time fillers that flash games and the like really are :)

Agreed.
And also, I was trying to explain to my friend about the kind of games I like (could see she was bored of me talking about Fallout though), gave up anyway when she started talking about FarmVille! I can't class things like that a game.

Agreed as well, phone games are technically games, however playing them doesn't make you what most of us would actually class as a gamer.

Note: I've decided phone games are bad anyways, I was playing some stupid little addictive bubble busting game on my phone when I didn't have access to my PC for about a week and now my wrist hurts ... quite a lot, especially if I try and do anything on my phone.

hahah that's mint...

shame she uses a console... booo

I don't class those who play farm ville or other internet games as "gamers" in any way. Whats next a person that plays angry birds, are they a gamer too? Nooooo

Each to their own with ye olde FarmVille thingy, but when I get about 50 requests a day asking me to join their 'amazing' farm on Facebook I wanna tell them where to stick their crops! :D

After so many years of playing, what I myself would consider real games, I couldn't, still can't and probably never will be able to bring my self to play a Facebook game or anything similar. This isn't just because I think they are tacky, but also because all the things that make a good game for me include but definitely not limited to; flexible gameplay, a good (sometimes more) believable storyline, enjoyable characters and probably the biggest for me are good graphics.

I struggle to now play games with what I would consider bad graphics, with the exception of certain games I have played in the past that I know I have and probably will enjoy again.

I'm about to chance having my right to continue being a gamer revoked by saying I don't want to still be gaming in ten years time, for a few reasons though. Such as my eyesight over recent years has degraded considerably (admittedly my own fault, but I blame the additictive hold games can have over you too!), but not only that I feel I have wasted too much time not doing other things and bettering myself in other ways. That said my variety of taste in games has gradually reduced over the years so I think it's inevitable at some point that I won't be able to appreciate gaming anymore.

That said, long live gaming! xD
