RTX 3070 New Build - Crashes To Black Screen

Super excited as my new pc is here, however I have turned it on for the first time and I have nothing!

It showed a PC specialist logo - so I know it is working, but after that I have nothing. Just a black screen.

Any ideas? This is my first PC so I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

You wouldn't use the provided windows installer anyway, always download the latest from here and use the create bootable media tool:

PCS Support advised a clean install of Windows 10, which I have done. Upon starting a Windows 10 session I am still experiencing crashes to black screen after about 30 seconds. This is followed by a forced shutdown by holding the power button in (I can't shutdown otherwise as I have no way to do this?). When I power the machine back up the PC will not start a new Windows session and I have to remove the hard drive partitions and reinstall the OS.

The other solutions advised by PCS to try before the above included:

• Unplugging the HDD from the Motherboard. This is still currently unplugged.
• Removing the small battery on the Motherboard to reset the BIOS.

The only other noteworthy symptom is that the monitor has something unusual going on with it. There are funny lines and bits and bobs (yeah, great explanation I know, I should have taken a picture last night) running over the display both in the BIOS and when Windows does install. I know that the monitor is not damaged as I tried it out with my Xbox a few days ago, and also if I open the monitor settings, there is nothing unusual about the part of the screen covered by the settings. If you have read any of my other posts you will know that this is my first PC, and I don't profess to know anything about them - but I am here to learn, so any advice you can give is greatly received. I am presuming the unusual display is because my GPU driver was deleted in the fresh install.

Here's hoping that my PC doesn't need an RMA.

For anyone who is interested, or following this thread...

PCS believe that I have a faulty M.2 which will not allow a stable Widows 10 session to run. They are sending out a replacement drive which will arrive with me tomorrow. I asked whether it was worth removing and reseating the existing drive, but they recommended I just remove it and fit the new drive tomorrow. Part of me is tempted to try it tonight anyway, because I'm curious. But curiosity did kill the cat... 😅

PCS have provided me with a guide to reinstall windows and all my drivers which involves sourcing all the drivers individually from the manufacturers websites. Is this the usual way you would reinstall drivers? I'm sure I read somewhere on here that doing a windows update automatically sources and reinstalls all the necessary drivers - but I could be wrong.

As always, your advice is gratefully received!

I reinstalled Windows lately. Every driver was installed automatically, though I did then go and install the Nvidia control panel to make sure I had up to date graphics drivers all the time. Honestly it's really easy to install Windows.

I'm not sure if it's different because I am installing windows from a USB, so it wouldn't know which drivers were required when I downloaded it.

It uses the windows drivers which are usually just as good as the drivers that you can download from the device makers. For me i always download the graphic card drivers cos they are usually better(in minor ways) than the window drivers

I was hoping that maybe I was missing an important driver, see my earlier post about some unusual display problems. I guess it could just be that the faulty M.2 is also causing these problems - here's hoping anyway.

I will update this thread tomorrow evening, provided that the new drive is delivered by PCS.

When you install windows follow these instructions:

Download a new copy of Windows using the Media Creation Tool to an 8GB (min) USB.
Boot that USB and choose a Custom Install.
Delete all UEFI partitions on the system drive (EFI System, Recovery, MSR Reserved, Primary).
Select the unallocated space that results and click the Next button. The installer will create the correct partitions and install Windows.
Run Windows Update repeatedly, even across reboots, until no more updates are found.
You may need/want to download and install the latest graphics driver from the Nvidia/AMD website (they change so regularly the latest version isn't always in the Windows libraries).

And when installing windows updates also include ALL the optional ones

er.. why? half the optional, if not more, generally don't apply unless you meet certain hardware/software requirement ie you use a particular bit of software/hardware..

not to mention you can possibly bork your window installation until you roll it back in safe mode (if that's possible), i have had to do fresh re-install a few times due to various optional updates

That's not entirely accurate. The optional updates will not be available to you unless your hardware/software meets the requirements for the updates. The fact that they are available indicates that your hardware/software IS applicable.

Optional updates are how Windows Update delivers most driver updates, which is why we ask you to install them if you're having issues.

Installing driver updates is not recommended unless you're having issues, so you're right that it's not common to always install optional updates - and certainly not without researching them so you know what is being installed. However, when you're having problems you want all the updates Microsoft has pushed for your platform - and that means installing the optional updates.

BTW. If you bork your system installing any update (whether feature, quality, service, or optional) it's almost always because there were already issues with your system.

That’s not correct, windows update optional are all the device drivers, it will find the correct driver that are contained within the windows catalogue which on desktops is almost all of them.

display drivers will need to be installed manually.

Just for anyone that might be curious - I reseated the existing m.2 onto the motherboard (just like PCS support said to not bother doing) and am currently installing all the windows updates. This is the most stable windows session I have run yet, normally I have crashed to black screen already.

I still have some goofy thing going on with the display, I'm hoping one of these updates may just fix that. I would upload a picture but I am not able to compress the image on my phone!

You could try reseating the graphics card as well? If it's been bumped around though to loose an M.2 of all things it's more than plausible that it could have loosened the graphics card as well.

Just crashed to black screen again. I'm tired and annoyed so going to investigate tomorrow, with the replacement M.2.

is there a good guide for reseating the GPU? I had to give it a wiggle after I reseated the M.2 as it did the long/short/short/short beeps. That sorted it but I do wonder if it is not sat right.
