Review of the Elimina Pro AMD

I just got the Elimina Pro Amd variant with the Ryzen 7 7735HS, 32GB, 2TB SSD and the RTX4060.

It's my second laptop from PCSpecialist. I bought the Proteus, a 15" with an i7 8750 and a 1070 in 2018 as a secondary computer for when I'm on the move/teaching in design and film schools. I was looking for a relatively inexpensive laptop that could still pack a punch. I had a few requirements as I'm using it for what is called content creation those days as well as some serious gaming. But I wasn't looking for everything to be top of the line as I have my quite powerful desktop for that. And PCSpecialist clearly fitted the bill as I was able to really get the configuration I wanted and be able to compromise where I could afford to in order to lower the price.

So I used my Proteus for 5+ years, really happy with it. But I recently felt it was time to upgrade it. The internal battery stopped working a few years ago, the laptop had to be plugged in all the time, the screen was probably its weakest point (I discovered quite some time after I bought it that the screen was only a 6bit panel, 262,144 colours, rather than the standard 8bit, 16 million colours ).

And, after scouring the internet, I found myself here again, looking at another occasional use laptop with the same idea behind it (relatively inexpensive, powerful enough to accomplish certain advanced tasks and gaming and willing to compromise on some areas). And the Elimina Pro looked perfect: much more powerful than my previous laptop, perfectly within budget with quite a few upgrades with the SSD (going from 512GB to 2TB) and RAM (going from 16 to 32GB) (even though I did upgrade those in my previous laptop over the years, which is something I appreciate greatly with those laptops). And the 165Hz, 16:10, QHD screen was a big bonus.

I bought it and got it within a week. And I wasn't disappointed. Almost everything is an improvement over the Proteus. It's lighter (2kg vs 3kg) with a smaller footprint, the design is cleaner and more restrained (even though the Proteus wasn't too over the top). The laptop is powerful, easy to use, exactly as expected, no surprises there. But the pleasant surprise was the screen. I knew it was a 165Hz, 15", 16:10 screen. but it wasn't advertised that it was also 10bit HDR capable. As I have a decent 4K HDR screen for my desktop, I can say that it is almost as good, the colours are accurate, the brightness is decent and overall feels perfect working on motion graphics projects, video editing and the likes. The native res of 2560*1600 might be a little bit much on recent games for the RTX4060, but slightly older titles, with the 165Hz refresh rate, I have to say that it feels good.

The downsides are few and far between. The fans can still get quite loud under heavy load. Probably just as much as the Proteus. But when not under stress, it's near silent (when the Proteus was just loud-ish). And I'm not a big fan of the keyboard layout. Because it has shaved a few centimeters in width, it is missing a few keys like page up/page down, the enter key for the num pad among them. Those keys can be used for shortcuts in some creative apps.

But overall, a great experience, great value, great design choices. I'll probably come back with PCSpecialist when I'll replace this one in a few years if the company keeps up with the same philosophy.
