Hi Guys,

Am wondering if you could help me out. Am looking for a fairly straight forward shooter to get my teeth into, nothing to hardcore or unforgiving. Mainly looking for single player as i have no online friends :(, but would consider multi.

I mainly play RPGs and MMOs and am branching out to get a taste of FPS (or TPS) on the pc. Am not looking for something ultra modern, just something i can kick back and play casually. So any underrated games out there i should be checking out?

I know it's pretty old now,but one of the best FPS games I ever played was Far Cry (the first one) :)

Doom 3 is a really good one, horror theme but has difficulty settings
Borderlands 1 is a really good single player, 2 is also good but your rewarded more for multiplier
FEAR 1, 2 and 3 is again Horror based and great story pretty much revolves around single player.
Rainbow 6 Vegas 1 and 2 are one of my favorite SWAT Team FPS Shooter again great story.

Gears of War for the PC is a really good TPS, looks great on the PC
Splinter Cell Double Agent or Splinter Cell Conviction are another 2 great TPS
Max Payne 1 and 2 Dirty Cop TPS

All the ones above should be good prices too as they have been out for a while, hope this helps.

New titles:Farcry3,Metro Last light,Dishonored.
Older: Metro 2033,Ghost Recon Future Soldier(third person shooter but is great)If you looking games for singleplayer try to avoid Battlefield 3 and all Call of duty titles. They are not worth it.Typical multiplayer shooters.
Borderlands and Borderlands 2 all the way :)

All great FPS games posted above and would definitely play some of them, one of my favourite shooting games is Elite Sniper v2. But then I love sniping games :D

I would definitely recommend FarCry3 if you're coming from RPG's/MMO's as they do have an element of leveling up, etc. Elite Sniper V2 is a very fun game as well.

You could check out Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 for a fiver on here: http://www.simplycdkeys.com/steam/sniper-ghost-warrior-2-limited-edition. I haven't played it myself but it looks pretty.
Is it just FPS's you're looking at or single player games in general? The Hitman games are good fun and I've had a lot of fun playing Sleeping Dogs lately (one of the first games I've properly gotten into in ages). Also Skyrim/Fallout:New Vegas are good choices if you want an RPG game.

I've personally gone off playing proper single player shooters, I never seem to be able to get into them that much. I just think shooters are so much more suited to competitive play online than killing AI nowadays. I start the game and just want to finish it straight away.

If you're looking for multiplayer friends I'd be happy to join you on something :) I definitely recommend sniper elite v2: zombie army for playing co-op online, it's really good even with randomers. I played for about 3 hours with the same bunch of guys without us having to say a word to each other on the mics and just typed any important information.

I'm playing things like BF3, Planetside 2, Blops 2 at the moment if you're thinking of getting any of them :) Or let me know what you've got!

Oh and apparently Spec ops: The line has a really good story but it's a third person shooter. I've only played 1 or 2 missions on it and haven't really got that absorbed by it yet but it seemed reasonable and can be picked up cheap! Metro games and Bioshock are also decent choices.

Rainbow 6 Vegas 1 and 2 are one of my favorite SWAT Team FPS Shooter again great story.

Are any of the Vegas's still popular? I'm pretty sure it was the first one I was completely hooked on. I still think to this day that it had the best attack/defend modes available and also the best customisation online. I'm pretty sure my favourite was the casino map were you could rappel down the windows or through the elevator shafts or sneak down the stairs, etc. There was so much versatility compared to its competitors! And finally a game that does customisation right! If you want to run quick but die in one shot, feel free to run around in a tank top. If you want to sponge as many bullets as possible but be no use at all for sprinting to an objective then load up with body armour. Not like battlefield or cod where it's just "oh here, have a perk that instantly makes you run faster and for longer". Pretty sure it was the first game I joined a decent clan on as well.

Do you know if they're still active and relevant or am I remembering them better than what they were? I imagine they'd look extremely dated now :( I'd love to get the first one but I imagine number 2 is the better choice...?

No there still active, i was playing last month, the only thing i HATE about the game is theres not graphical settings so its Console Graphics and thats it.

I remember having great fun on it, the weapon customization was AMAZING, i love that you can take an assult rifle burst mode for up close and single shot for sniping, its a great function that i havent seen in many games, that always annoys me about COD, i know the gun has multiple fire modes but it lockes them on 3 burst, fully auto or single shot.

I also loved the crazy stuff you could do like throw a sniper scope onto a shotgun, it was great.

Might install it again tonight when i get home now that i've spoken about it.

Rainbow 6 Patriots is still on preorder on some sites but i heard it was canelled or delayed :(

Were you playing the first or second one? The customisation was pretty class though, I know battlefield lets you change the firing mode but the assault rifles on single shot just feel like pea shooters. Watch Full Metal Jacket and at the end a single shot AK47 should double up as a sniper, not a rifle that still takes 6 or 7 shots to kill somebody! :L

Hmmm I may have to scout out for vegas on the cheap again. It was cheating a little bit being able to see round corners. I remember firing out in the open was always terrible but was dead accurate if you were leaning out of cover.

Many thanks for all the replies guys. I'll need to check out some of those suggestions when im out of work.
Although ive mainly played MMOs/RPGs i have played a handful of FPSs notable ones are FEAR and Borderlands, which i really enjoyed.
Im just getting a bit tired of MMO/RPG grind just now and am looking for a refreshing change...

@Grimezy
Mainly looking for FPS or TPS shooters rather than sneakers although i will definately be checking out those sniper games suggested. Thanks for the offer for multiplayer and i may take you up on that as there are a few f2p multi games that have caught my eye Blacklight Retribution and Warframe to name a couple. How is Planetside 2 by the way? does it rely heavily on co-op?
Funny you should mention Spec Ops The Line as that did look pretty good, along with Singularity which is pretty cheap.

Theres definately alot more out there than i originally though. Plan of action is probably to get 1 or 2 games initially then wait for the summer Steam sale to kick in to get some others :gun_bandana:

I cannot recommend Far Cry 3 more - get it. For getting into FPS it's just unreal. So much to explore, breathtaking scenery, a feeling of freedom constrained by destiny... it's all there. Vehicles, swimming, animals, humans, tribes, baddies, villains, shipwrecks, explosions, machine guns, sniper rifles, bow and arrows and not to mention nudity in all its 60fps glory!

Oh... and not to mention the most insane ending to go with an absolutely insane game.

Keep an eye out on the PC Game Deals thread in this section of the forum. Tons of decent links posted and lots of other sites that are cheaper than Steam!

Planetside 2 is alright, I haven't played a huge amount but it's worth giving a go. There's a few other guys on the forums that play it especially on Friday evenings so it'd be an easy one to get into. Doesn't rely on co-op much as there are so many players on it that a small team or 3 or 4 mates aren't going to make a huge difference to the overall battle. There are some pretty fun battles though and there's lots of things to unlock, etc. I personally haven't paid any money for the in-game items but I know a couple of people who have spent £8-£15 just on getting a decent gun and some upgrades, etc which is reasonable if you're going to be playing the game a lot. Certainly don't need to pay money if you don't want to though!

It certainly is, and if you want a freshened up version then you could do far worse than Fakefactory's cinematic mod for Half life 2. Link below:

Half Life 2 Cinematic mod...complete overhaul

There are updated hd characters, visuals, visual effects, sounds etc. and it is mostly all very well done indeed. You don't have to change certain things if you preferred the look of the original either. Highly recommended.

You do need the whole package including episodes 1 and 2, but you should have them anyway :)

That looks awesome, thanks for the link. I'm literally playing through the entire saga right now and am half way through episode 1 now... but some modernised HD overlays are better late than never for this playthrough! Shame I'm stuck up north without my laptop for a few days to actually test these mods out:(

I'm not exactly a beginner with computers but I literally have no idea how to install something like this mod. My expertise with installations relies on double clicking an installation file and saying 'yes' to every option. Has anyone installed this Half Life 2 mod and therefore have any idea how to actually do it?!
