Recommended PSU - 850 or 1000w? - New build desktop

Hi all,

I have ordered a new build PC and currently waiting for it to be built. Probably out of boredom, I am looking over my order whilst in pre-production and analysing everything. From this. I have developed a concern on whether the PSU I have ordered will be enough, or if I need to increase the wattage. Here is my spec below:

Case
CORSAIR OBSIDIAN SERIES™ 500D SE CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12 Core CPU (3.8GHz-4.6GHz/70MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard
ASUS® CROSSHAIR VIII HERO (DDR4, PCIe 4.0, CrossFireX/SLI) - RGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3600MHz (4 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
10GB ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE RTX 3080 - HDMI, DP
1st Storage Drive
2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA 120 2.5" SSD, (up to 560MB/sR | 540MB/sW)
1st Storage Drive
8TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 5400RPM, 256MB CACHE
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 520 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 5000MB/R, 2500MB/W)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
Corsair H115i RGB PLATINUM Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
Sound Card
ASUS STRIX Raid Pro 7.1 PCIe sound card
Wireless/Wired Networking
10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT (Wi-Fi NOT INCLUDED)
USB/Thunderbolt Options
MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS

The reason for my concern is that on the ASUS website in relation to the GPU, they recommend that the PSU wattage is 850w. However, they only appear to take the card and the CPU into account? I am concerned that the other elements of the build will surpass the capability of the PSU, so not sure whether I need to get a larger one just to be safe?

Opinions are welcome! Apologies if I come across like such a novice!

I thought the Crosshair VIII had some compatibility issues with the 3900X? Not sure if this has been fixed, might be worth looking into it. If so, the Rog Strix motherboard definitely pairs up nicely with the CPU. You can drop the thermal paste, the H115i comes with a quality paste pre-applied. Likewise with the sound card, the on board audio is excellent these days.

To answer your original question, the 850w would have you covered but if you’ve got the budget, the 1000w might be worth it. Who knows how power hungry the 4000 series cards will be when they land? 😆

Hi AgentCooper! Thanks for responding.

Cheers for the advice and I'll look into the Motherboard issue with the 3900X. I have just watched a review on YouTube for the Rog Strix 3080 and it mentions that the power draw is around 300 - 400w, so I will up the PSU to 1000w just to cover it.

Considering how long it is taking to get our hands on 3080 cards, the 4000 series cards might land before my PC does! :ROFLMAO:

Oh well, it will be worth the wait!

Nice system,

I think 850 is plenty, take a look at this YT

One note: you should consider a .m2 SSD as they have faster transfer speeds.

I would definitely consider putting a second M.2 in rather than the 2 TB SSD.

I personally think it’s gets more leverage from the Motherboard and technology.

Yep, there's definitely an argument for that!

I, for example, have a 500GB Samsung M.2 which I keep my OS and programs on, and another 1TB Samsung M.2 that I keep my games on. Super speedy and when the time comes to do a clean install of Windows, I won't lose all my games/saves or have to spend time faffing about backing them up.

It's a bit of a luxury move but well worth it if you've got the budget :) (y)

Hello,

I'm back! I've been tinkering with my order amendments and I can get a second Seagate Barracuda M.2 card at 2TB for a cost of £37 if I take your advice @AgentCooper and remove the thermal paste and sound card. The only thing I am worried about is whether the motherboard I have would take two 4th Gen PCIe NVMe M.2 cards? I've tried to have a look at the specs for the motherboard and it isn't easy to follow.

Sorry for sounding like such a noob. Haven't really looked into a PC in this much detail before!
