Recommendation for Dual Link DVI Cables?

Hey guys!

This is just a quick thread to ask whether anybody knew or could recommend some good quality, gold plated Dual Link DVI cables. I've found some on amazon but I'm not entirely convinced they're Dual Link. I WAS going for HDMI until I found out their speeds aren't great at 24Hz. So Dual Link DVI is essential.

Thanks guys! :D

Just thought I'd mention, the ones I linked you to have gold plated contacts, but a cable is like a chain it's only as strong as it's weakest link and I don't think having part of the cable connection being gold plated would make any difference. :)

agreed ^^ high quality cables all the way through :p no matter what the cost, allthough we must be sensible :)

Okie dokie guys. I know that there are a few different DVI cables, but all I know is that the AMD Radeon 7970 uses Dual Link. I found this picture, and if you zoom in then you can see the type of connectors, however I'm not too sure what that type of DVI connection as I know there's DVI-D, DVI etc

Thanks again for the help ;)

PS: These ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/DVI-D-Ferri...=1366279451&sr=1-8&keywords=dual+dvi+cable+1m ) were the ones I was looking at before and I'm not too sure how good they are :p .

Well, the ones I linked to are only £4 pound for 2M, of good quality and do the job ,so why pay ten times that. :)

The port showing on the graphics card is DVI-I (dual link),all you need is a DVI-D ( digital dual link) cable, this will fit into the port on your card.
DVI-I (integrated) combines digital and analog, you won't need the analog part of the connection.

Thank you Vanthus for explaining that :)

I think I may either stick with the one I found or look in further detail at one in this thread :D

I use the Dual link DVI that came with my monitor and it works perfectly. I imagine it's very cheap and nasty but I can't complain, they do the job. I'd go with Vanthus' suggestion, I'm fairly sure there have been many tests that show that the quality of the cable doesn't influence the quality at all in a lot of cases. The link below is talking about HDMI cables but I would imagine it'd be the same with DVI. I bought two HDMI cables for my xbox and blu ray player from Shopto.net who don't really sell cables. They were around 2 pound each, (1 x 1m, 1 x 2m), thick braided cable and gold connectors. Couldn't ask for much more, they've been flawless.

Edit: By the way, I wasn't using Shopto HDMI cables as a suggestion. I was just stating that cheap cables can still be high quality :)

Oh okie dokie. I don't know whether the monitor I'm purchasing comes with a cable, so I'll purchase one anyway, hoping it may be a bit more reliable. As for the HDMI, I don't think I'll get HDMI, because if I'm correct they max out a 24Hz, which is pretty slow from my knowledge, and the monitor I'm getting maxes at 60Hz, and the last thing I want is to not make use of my hardward ;) (and I did see how you were using them as an example, however I'm just making this statement to see if my information is correct :D )

I understand now how cheap cables can still be good (mind you the ones I'm getting are £2.95 for 1M with gold plated pins etc, and they're good quality for the price.).

Thanks Grimzey :)

HDMI's max at 60hz :) Dual Link DVI's can go up to 144hz (and possibly further). Only difference between HDMI and Dual Link DVI at 60hz is that HDMI will carry sound whereas DVI will need external speakers.

This is two HDMI posts in a matter of seconds for me! but iirc HDMI 1.4b supports 120Hz? as per my other post, im happy to be wrong...

Yea I believe HDMI 1.4b will support 120hz but I wasn't sure if they were widely available yet or widely used. Standard HDMI's will only go up to 60hz though.

Late October 2011 (a quick wiki told me this, I didnt know exactly) they became a standard but Im sure the lesser versions are still available. Always worth checking the specification if you ever buy one. If it doesn't say '1.4b' or '120Hz' then check to see if its 3D capable in the listing, if so then it should be the latest revision.

Oh if this is the case then I will stick with the original HDMI cables I was going with. I watched a video and they said that HDMI cables maxed at 24Hz which alarmed me.

Thanks guys ;)

Consoles and Films max out at 24hz and they're generally connected via HDMI which is why somebody may have assumed that :) HDMI will be fine unless you're planning to buy a 120hz monitor (which then like Kruppsy said you could buy the newer version of HDMI which will support it). You can also use Displayport if your monitor/graphics card supports it.
