Does anyone know whether vortex II can be upgraded from 6990m to 7970m

1. does it need new heatsink?
2. is it plug and play or will there be new bios for it?
3. does pcspecialist able to help with the upgrade?

Upgrading the GPU in a laptop is a pain in the neck and not something you want to try yourself if you have never been inside a laptop before.

I do know PCS will be launching an upgrade service in the next couple of weeks (i think) maybe a month, that way they could take it back and perform the upgrade if it is possible. I don't know if it is possible myself, but i' sure PCS could tell you if you call them, use live chat or drop them an email.

The 7970M will use the same MXM slot so will fit in the Vortex II chassis. You will also be able to use your existing heatsink. The problem is that Clevo probably won't make the drvers for this GPU and therefore whilst it will work and you will get a display the card will be useless. We will see if drivers can be developed so that the chassis can be upgraded. If we have any luck we will post back here.

Today we tried inserting a GTC 675M from a Vortex III into a Vortex II that previously had a 560M installed. The card installed OK and booted up into Windows, but the drivers would not install. We are looking into whether some different drivers will work.

I have no idea about nvidia driver....

but for ati, i always download the latest modded driver from 3dguru for my 6990m... I am using 12.4 mobility driver (25 april 2012) from 3d guru....
The reason I used 3dguru driver because:

1. ati official website dont allow me update my driver there cause they say I must use manufacture driver
2. when I go to clevo/sager official website, the latest driver they have is mobility 8.xx which is updated a year ago (august 2011) to be exact..
3. 3d guru provided me the latest driver for my 6990m without any problem since I bough my vortexII a year ago.

I dont know if they provide modded nvidia mobility driver aswell. I ll try to look for it now

We tried some different drivers yesterday but without success. We are currently investigating further but it's not looking great...

I have upgraded a few GPU's in these types of laptops and with patience and a bit of planning it is quite straight forward. You just need to make sure you have the time, a clean environment, cleaning solution and thermal paste. I always use an anti static wrist strap too.

By the way, its not the Drivers that are the problem concerning new GPU's, its the system Bios and EC.

May I ask you why'd you try it? :) it's only a gtx 580m with a different name. (in all honesty I'd be more interested in seeing 670m[570m] tested as a budget upgrade from my 560m because I haven't found either version confirmed with the lappy)
Either one of them (given you take the 6xx series) probably needs the driver inf file modified with device strings to enable you to install the drivers.

We tried to to see if we could get this new card to install in an older model. You're right in saying that the drivers require a modified inf file but we have not been able to create this and Clevo are not supporting it. If you come across the drivers that work correctly please let us know, there are many customers who would like to upgrade their GPUs from 560M.

I did some digging for you. A bit different, but in this case a clevo gtx 580m was flashed with a clevo gtx 675m vbios. Modified drivers were installed from laptopvideo2go to get it to work but I wasn't able to find the exact version of drivers used. I suggest you try these drivers and the modded inf provided and see if it works out http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/29509-v30142-windows-7vista-64bit-nvidia-mobile-oem/
I'm interested in the results myself, following that getting 7970m to work with vortex II seems to be very uncertain. All of this is of course given that the laptop will actually POST with the card plugged in.

Edit: As a note, there is also no official drivers supporting gtx 675m of now.

bumpidi bump, any news on this one? The testing is going on with 7970M in other places but I'd like to have a backup plan just in case :)

Sager

Hi I believe Sager have managed to get a 7970m working on a vortex II they are now offering upgrades. I think the issue is to do with the lcd will you be offering the upgrade by anychance?
