Real Users' Benchmarks - Rank of PCS Laptops

FerrariVie

Super Star
Hi,

I would like to share my Firestrike results with you all (especially as my build is a bit uncommon) and, with your help, also create a consolidated thread with benchmarks of most PCS laptops. Hopefully, this will be of help to future buyers looking to compare their current builds and measure performance gains with a new PCS laptop, as well as for current owners to compare their performance with similar builds, aiming to spot any issue that they might not even know existed.

Rules:
  1. Set up your power profile in Control/Gaming Center to "Performance/Turbo mode". If not using Clevo/Tongfang software, just use the stock CPU clocks and boost (for stock rank) or mention if you're doing some kind of overclock/underclock (for Tuned rank). If only undervolt was done (with no clock changes), then it is still going to be considered on the stock rank;
  2. Run 3DMark Firestrike benchmark on your laptop (Open 3DMark -> "Benchmarks" button-> Scroll down until you find Fire Strike). You can download 3DMark here for free, in case you still don't have it: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/3dmark-download.html
  3. Post your URL link to results (click on the orange "Compare result online" button that will show up after the benchmark is finished, then copy the pop-up site's URL. That website will give us detailed info about the results, avg GPU temps and clocks (to confirm if overclock was used or even to help us to troubleshoot something weird with the results). Benchmarks posted with only a screenshot won't be added, so please include the results URL;
  4. Please mention if you're using Overclock or Underclock in either the CPU or GPU, as we're going to have 2 separate ranks for each of those (Stock and Tuned). We could check that on the results page, but it will make our lives easier (mine, especially) to not need to double-check all the specs against the stock values.
Any doubts, feel free to ask here or send me a PM.

Since I got my Nova 15" (4 months ago), I've been testing a lot of different setups of GPU and CPU, and now I've reached finally reached a point where it is working as I expected it to, regarding performance and noise.

Stock is stock, nothing major to explain about it, apart from the fact that I don’t use control center, so it’s using the default profile in Ryzen Master and a custom fan curve from a third-party app. So my temps should be a bit higher than what they would on control center’s performance profile, as this would have cranked the fans up (which was not the case on any of my tests).

This is the set up that I really use on a daily basis, as I can get a better performance overall with lower temps (and much lower noise). It’s basically a CPU manual OC to 4.2Ghz with manual voltage to a max of 1.19V, while undervolting and underclocking the GPU to 1.605Ghz. This makes me gain some FPS at the same time as I’m losing temperatures of the overall system. Since my main bottleneck is the CPU, that’s what I needed to do and I’m really happy with the results, as you can see the GPU score is not much below stock, while I can run a nice OC on the CPU and still have lower temps than stock (75° CPU max, 65° GPU max).

Isn’t the Nova a Desktop replacement laptop so uses a desktop CPU rather than a mobile one? As such ‘normal’ PCS gaming laptops will show lower scores? (Just asking before some of the Optimus / Defiance owners get worried about their scores. Will try to find time to run mine later.
In theory yes, and I'm expecting the 17" RECOIL IV (intel DTR) to be topping the ranks, as it used to offer better GPU options than the Nova.

However, you'll be surprised to see some Ryzen 7 laptop CPUs performing better on physics than some of the desktops i5 and Ryzen 3 (maybe even 5?).

In your case, for example, I'm expecting you to get the same or even better results than mine, if not overall definitely at least on physics (as it's CPU bound). However, your GPU is less powerful than mine, but by how much?

Discussing and confirming some of those assumptions is the purpose of this thread, there is no prize for the winner :p

OK - this is in Gaming mode as for some reason when I am using Turbo mode, it black screens and I have to turn off and on again - Im looking into this.
No over or underclocking that I am aware of as I dont fiddle with any of that

Thanks for that, I'll add your results to the list. As I expected, see how your physics score is A LOT higher than mine (even though I have a desktop CPU)? However I was expecting the 2060 to be closer to the 2070. While your results are within the same range as the majority of users, there are around 30-40% of users with similar specs that have a bit higher results than yours (between 15400 and 17500), so maybe there's a bit more performance to find there?
1609841505692.png

As you said, it is weird how you're getting a black screen when using turbo mode. That might be the reason why those users are getting higher results, as they're probably able to successfully run the benchmark with that mode on. Did you find any pattern, like a specific time during the test where the crash happened both times, or is it random?

We can always update your results when you get that fixed ;)

Amazing, @Scott ! Your 3 years-old laptop (my guess, sorry if I'm wrong) is performing roughly the same as my brand new one. That for sure is a beast ;)

It loads up the first 'loading' bar then black screens. First time I ran it, I had some music, next times it black screens straight away. I have run Turbo mode on other benchmarks and they work ok so yes very strange. I'm going to stick it down to a DirectX 11 / software anomaly rather than start to fiddle too much with any settings as every thing is working fine as far as Im concerned normally with gaming etc.

Heres timespy on Turbo: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (Notebook refresh) video card benchmark result - AMD Ryzen 7 4800H,TongFang GK7NR0R (3dmark.com) - I seem to be in the higher percentile for this one.

Some interesting information to put forward while scouting about. Above is my 2020 result. Before all the Intel palava, and when I got the laptop, my vanilla score was

I can't actually find my no.1 score from that time. I remember hitting 3rd spot for a time on the results page.

This is the best I can find, from when I hit 4th spot.

Yeah, that looks a lot better now. Maybe give it a go after Nvidia releases a newer driver? Could be indeed a driver issue with DX11.

I'll give it a try on Timespy later and post here, just to compare our results (but I'll keep Firestrike on the ranks, though).

It would be interesting to see how it would perform now at stock, just to measure the actual impact of the intel security corrections :)

Managed to get it run by turning on Turbo mode part way through the 'Demo' starting LOL :D it then worked through the rest of the tests ok - strange.

This looks a bit better - will try again later when i have more time to play around with it...Im supposed to be working LOL :D

I think I did before. IIRC it cost around 1000 points. Not insignificant to say the least.

Some reads here...

Im pleased with it :D

Shame I couldnt get the CPU score of 1488 on my best run on the graphics card as it might have helped me not be in last place LOL :D

Ok so how do i get that one
When you are in 3DMark, click on the "Benchmarks" tab (I think it's a tab, or button. It might be Other Benchmarks). You will see all the optional benchmarks that you can run. Select the Firestrike one (Not Ultra or Extreme) :)
