Question time: RAM..

Hey guys,

Was just wondering.. when i get my computer.. to go for 4gb (1600Mhz) or 8gb (1333Mhz)? DO the 'Mhz' make a difference?? does it make it faster in any way?

I'll be using the PC for gaming.. so wondering which will be the best.

Yep as DED says go for the 8GB, you wont notice much difference between 1600 and 1333 especially if your not overclocking, and the 8GB will be plenty. 4GB is becoming a bit restricting but is still a decent amount for modern computers.

Hi there when I posted about a week ago about my build I was informed that 4gb of ram would be plenty as most new games are gpu hungry than ram so I upped my graphic card and changed my ram to 4gb samsung 1333mhz just thought I would pass the advice on

Nooob, you were not lied to :) 4GB is fine. 8GB just gives wiggle room. In addition, when more than 4GB is needed, you can easily add more :)

4GB is fine for max settings gaming but 8GB allows you to do so much more, for a start it will allow you to run multiple programs in the background when playing games, it will also let you set up servers between you and friends, thats what ill be doing on minecraft with LogMeIn Hamachi, there is also a program (cant remember the name) that lets you save files directly onto the RAM for speedy loadup, often useful to put on 1/2 large windows files for bootup

aah okay thanks for the advice.. I'll see what i'll go for.. i may get the 4gb 1600Mhz.. because i can always add on some more a couple months later? but i'll see what happens when it comes to ordering :)

Yeha noob 4GB is absolutley fine, when I say its becoming a bit restricting, I say this because OS's (mainly windows) are becoming bigger, they require more RAM to run, Windows 7 uses quite a bit of memory plus games use quite a bit, You shouldnt have a problem running games with 4GB but certain tasks I do require more than 4GB, infact some of the tasks I run currently require atleast 16GB sometimes I see 20+ being used.

Over the next couple of years you will start to need more then 4GB but as DED said you can easily add more and increase to 8GB.

Hi DED I didn't state I was being lied too I was just passing on what I was told by RAKK mate just trying to save the guy money and passing on info to which I was passed also on another note would I be able to if needed later add more RAM ?? Just wondered for future ref ??

Um id like to see this information :), RAM is non persistant, i.e. as soon as they lose power they lose information.

hahaha okay.. well I'll definitely be running my minecraft server in the background and maybe itunes and facebook.. so i'll probs go for 8gb 1333Mhz :)

This isnt using your ram though, this is a ram disk, its a different thing entirely, it just uses faster memory. Memory comes in all speeds but fastest is L1 Cache, this is normally for cpu usage, it is ridiculously expensive for the size. Then you have other caches, then you have RAM, then SSD, then HDD.
