PSN coming back up, new patch available

Noticed there were a few PS3 gamers on here so I thought I'd put this up seeing as no one else has yet.
PSN is currently undergoing maintenance so the patch might not be available right now - I got it and installed it this morning. But it's available from http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/support/system-software/* whenever the servers come back up. Or just do it through PSN... but downloading it from here is much faster usually. :)
You'll be required to jump through a few hoops to reset your PSN password, fair enough :)
AFAIK this will allow matchmaking services to resume, with the store and other gubbins available at a later date (whatever, people just want to shoot other people in the face over t'interwebs guys!)

* put PS3UPDAT.PUP on a USB stick under the folder structure [usb]:\PS3\UPDATE\

eg. U:\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP

Then load the update on your PS3 via Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media

I downloaded the firmware patch via PC and transferred it across manually, even before the network came back online. I also changed my password via PC, and the mail arrived almost as soon as I clicked the confirmation button. it was much less hassle than I thought it would be, in fact, I wouldn't class what I experienced as hassle in any way.

We'll see how long it lasts! Hopefully it won't be a "quick fix" I'll be installing the patch tonight :)

Youd be worried if it is a quick fix seeing how long its been offline...imagine how long it would have been offline for the equiv full fix :D (2012?)

Well all the SOE games came up yesterday (my gaming fix is back :)), so yeah, I'm not surprised PSN isn't too far behind.
Though admittedly they were having some login issues, including claiming that people weren't old enough to play apparently (though that got fixed).

They staggered the regions that could come back online to avoid DDOSing themselves by accident so there was a lot of whining yesterday by people saying Sony is useless and they still can't get on (well duh?). Works fine for me... time for some Marvel vs. Capcom!

Yeh agreed with that kriwad...some people just dont get what 70million people logging on at once will do :D Would have been rather fuuny as an outside observer though for the players that moaned to actually DDoS the system they are so desperate to get back in to!

Been fine for me and my friends, although I did have a problem changing 1 of their passwords yesterday afternoon. Time outs due to DNS lookup failure, took about 30m to finally get it sorted.
Spent most of yesterday over a mates playing MW2 online. Wish my friends would buy PCs but apparently the kids come first lol :p

For a non PS3 user this has all been quite hillarious. I'm always on at my mate with a PS3 (pretty much the only one of us that has one) to get rid of it and get an Xbox but he wouldn't have it, even after this fiasco he's still sticking with a PS3 as the xbox doesn't have bluray and you have to pay to play.
Ok it doesn't have bluray but everythings going digital anyway and as for paying for the service.... XBL never been down since it started ;-) I've never had a single problem with it.

Who'd have thought MS would be the preferred option for network security? Haha
Use which one you prefer... they're both outdated:p

I remember my friend telling me about this, he couldn't connect at all during this period.

things have not been THAT bad, have they?
Sure have... I even remember watching an episode of Home & Away at some point! The PC is pretty much in storage until I move house, nightmare....
Oh dear Meds, have you seen a doctor about that, cos that's not healthy at all!!!

Personally I went and borrowed a bunch of DVD's of a friend (got through the first season of Fringe and halfway through the second season as well), though I may have also worn a hole in the carpet pacing around wondering what to do (ok, slight exaggeration, the carpet was pretty threadbare before the event (rented flat, crappy carpet) but I think it's more threadbare now).
