PSA: Latest Nvidia driver bricking cards

Please please be aware of this, the latest nvidia driver is being reported to fatally brick nvidia cards, and not just the 5090

Jay has an additional note pinned in the comments:

“Turns out this is a much wider issue affecting people on older gen nvidia cards too using 572.16 driver! Some people have been able to DDU away their issues, but many have not and continue to experience issues even after rolling back”

Iwould strongly suggest to anyone on nvidia to roll back from that January driver release until this is sorted.

Heres a guide for DDU, in this instance it seems pertinent to be in safe mode when running DDU

I've had that version installed for a week, but might remove it just in case!
It seems to be IC power related and a gradual deterioration to the point the IC melts

Begs the question, if this is confirmed the same result on older gen cards, absolutely no way that protection should be within the driver, it should be a hardware limitation surely? Quite a major hardware floor that’s obviously been present for a while!

I'm still running 566.36, so will stay with that until a safe to use version comes out

Just about to check which one I have. I have a feeling it might be the latest.

I wonder if this has any relation to MSFS2024 crashing almost consistently in VR for me. Colour me curious.

Does anyone know if this affects mobile GPUs as well?

I'm on 572.16, but I'm not feeling anything at the moment, which is probably because I don't have time to do anything other than surf or watch videos to fall asleep, so my GPU is basically unused.

Would it be better to roll back anyway, just for safety?

I would just for now to be safe

Appreciate the heads up.

I'd not used DDU before, but it was easy enough with your guide. I was on 572.16 but have gone back to 566.36 like the others.

Tempted to download this new driver in the hope that it bricks everything as the excuse to get a new PC!

Rock and a hard place.... consider the scenario's...

PC bricked - Go to buy new..... can't get a 50xx, new PC delayed..... imagine the deprivation for the lord of steam?

PC bricked - Buy new - Land a belter of a 50xx system all singing all dancing.... install the drivers.... 50xx bricked on first outing

PC doesn't brick, won't brick and just to spite you starts to give the most audible coil whine just to spite you

That's the sort of luck I would have to be fair.

A few years back I entered a tombola in work with all kinds of really good prizes with every ticket being a winner. Was hoping for a half decent bottle of wine or a nice box of chocolates. Something like that.

I won....a bottle of vinegar.

Luck is not usually on my side!

I won a bottle of vinegar too, when I worked in Dubai…but it was a £75 bottle of aged Balsamic ;)

Also got presented with a ‘bottle’ of Kalashnikov vodka on my final day in Moscow…only for it to be confiscated by airport security as it was too big and in the shape of an AK-47 🤬
