Hiya guys,
Thought I'd just gather a few thoughts here while I see about a possible RMA. I bought a Vortex III back in late August for the start of my three year university course and couldn't be more pleased (except for a few niggles which I have addressed in a review I'll post in a week) but within the last few weeks it seems to have developed a rather critical problem. Before I describe the problem I'll briefly outline the spec just to give everyone a little insight into the hardware/software environment present.
* Intel i7-3720QM @ 2.6GHz (Turbo ~ 3.6GHz)
* 16GB Samsung DDR3 (1600MHz ~ 2x 8GB)
* AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB
* 17.3" Chi-Mei 1080p ~ AG ~ LCD/LED
* 128GB Kingston SV200 SSD
* 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Black
* Sony BDRW Optiarc 5235
* Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 /w BT
On the software side;
* Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (located on SSD)(reinstalled once by yours truly because of having to sort out device drivers!)
* Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon x64 (located on WD Black - second partition)
* Windows 8 Pro x64 (located in a VHD on the WD Black)
The issue is that the Kingston SSD appears to have developed a bug/fault? where it'll run perfectly fine (in so far as you'd expect from a cheap SSD) for a random period of time and then all of a sudden, abruptly slow the read/write speeds RIGHT down to the point where it causes a complete lockup in 7 and you can do naught but move the cursor onscreen. On the many occasions this happened it stayed like that for as long as I could be bothered to leave it until I got irritated and just did a hard reset. On the single occasion that I did leave it for about 40mins it simply BSOD'd on me and rebooted itself. It's extremely annoying as I can be doing anything at any point, loading up an IRC client, halfway through a document or just playing a game of something and it'll still occur.
I might add that I've since heard some negative feedback about the early SV200 range which was supposedly fixed in a more recent firmware update which was globally applied to all new SV200's leaving the factory (including mine after I checked) so that rules the possibility of the problem arising due to the buggy firmware. The issue also doesn't occur in Mint or 8 which points to the SV200 being the root of the problem.
Has anyone else experience this problem or any other with the SV200? If so, what steps did you take to diagnose/resolve the problem and to what effect?
I'll be talking to PCS' tech support about RMA'ing this Kingston anyway since I'd like to grab a 256GB 840 from Samsung soon but I'd like to hear if anyone else can shed any light on this and to see how many more SV200 owners might have defective SSD's.
