My nephew, who's completing his networking degree, and just did a year's WE at Cisco, has been looking over this replacement for my old PC. First he said the Graphics card (4GB Nvidia GTX 1650) was 'very weak', so this spec has the upgrade. Now he says the power source is 'a bit weak'. Is he correct?
BTW I'm not a massive gamer at all, I'm mainly doing admin and writing novels and promoting them online, using Steam for games. The main thing for me is it will last for years (last PC Specialist computer bought back in 2011) without needing upgrading.

The term 'weak' totally depends on your requirements.

For an office PC, the GTX1650 and CV450 is plenty (even just the iGPU of the 5600G CPU would be plenty).

However, for anything more than 1080p gaming, then you need a better GPU, which then pushes up the PSU requirement. Although you probably don't need a CPU with an integrated GPU if you're buying a discrete GPU too.

Steam is a games platform, not a game, so it doesn't give us any idea of your gaming requirements (sports sims, FPS, RPG, flight sims, etc.) or the resolution/frame rate you're likely to play (the model or specs of your monitor would help there).

Also, most of us on here would not recommend the small form factor (SFF) cases (is there a specific need for such?), as they limit the choices somewhat, and reduce options for upgrades in a couple of years (so instead of replacing the whole computer, you could just swap out the GPU if you start playing more power-hungry games).

I would advice removing Norton 360 AV, as it adds nothing to the excellent built-in Microsoft offerings, and is just another program taking resources & burrowing into your operating system.

Thank you for your advice - I'm not sure I completely undersood the 3rd paragraph starting 'However.' I'm not playing flight sims or hungry games, streaming etc. Assassin's Creed would prob. be the top end game I would play, but it's not a priority. Are you saying the upgraded Graphics Card requires a better power supply? My current monitor is a Samsung HDTV monitor (SyncMaster P2370HD) which has worked well for me so far. The team recommended the mini-PC for my requirements - maybe the fact I am a very light gamer might eradicate the name for a GPU upgrade? Lastly, do you recommend I not use any anti-virus software, except for that provided by Microsoft? I'm intending to buy the 1 off Home and Office for £119 so I don't have to pay annually.

What are your thoughts?

Hi Lucy.

The 'however' paragraph, was just to point out the higher end GPUs require a more powerful PSU...for example a good 4k GPU would use 300-400 watts by itself, so a 450w PSU would not be suitable (we're recommending 850-1000w PSU for these).

For a SyncMaster P2370HD the GPU requirement isn't that high, as it's only full HD/1080p (1920x1080) @ 60hz (so 60 FPS), so the GTX1650 would be plenty for low settings in AC Valhalla...although an RTX2060 would of course allow better quality/FPS in AC Valhalla, and would enable an upgrade to a 1440p/2k (2560x1440) monitor at some point. If you did go for the RTX2060, then I'd recommend a slightly higher-powered PSU (a 600w one at a minimum).

The addition of the RTX2060 would negate the need for the 5600G APU (APU = CPU with integrated GPU), so you could save some £££ going for the non-G 5600 (not a lot, but every £ saved helps to pay for upgrades elsewhere).

The current generation of AV/security software included in Windows 10 + 11 by default is as good as or better than any paid for, consumer-level offering from Norton/Avast/Kaspersky/Avira/etc. It's also built directly into the system, so you don't have to pay or worry about trials/subscriptions expiring and the extra AV possibly conflicting with other software on your computer.

Could you add the configuration link to your original post, so that I can modify it to show you what I mean / optimise it.

Can you also confirm whether the very small case is intentional, as it severely limits the options on the configurator.

For example, in the mini-PC config, you pay about the same price for some worse components (motherboard/wifi) than you do in the full size config.

I'm definitely flexible on case sizes. The reason for the mini-case was some of the tower cases were too tall or too wide. My current tower case is 410 H x 280 W x 405 D an dfits into my desk unit. It can't be any taller , and I noticed some of the cases have USB ports on top. But any case this sort of size would work out great for me, and I like the idea of lights very much!! As I mentioned, I'm buying Office Home and Student outright to avoid the annual subs.

Hi Lucy.

The two options I provided were based on 1) your original config in the tiny case; and 2) the better components in a larger case.

However, I then read the reason for the small case was the space you have available. An enclosed space will also compromise the PC's ability to cool down, as there will be less airflow.

The 2nd config would be better for your money (although I'd prefer the Nvidia 3060 or AMD 6600 GPU), but that would take the price up another £100.

Ignore that case recommendation, as it looks like the configuration tool has the Height and Depth transposed. It was 395(H) x 220(W) x 450(D)...but the Corsair website shows it as 450(H) x 220(W) x 395(D).

I've gone back to the small case configurator, as I couldn't find any lower than the 410mm you need.

This one is one 330mm high, and has USB ports on the top of the case...

It's a real shame about the standard tower cases - they're either too tall or too deep for my PC - there is still airspace around the unit and I've never had a problem with overheating. But these cases are so bland, with no lights! I've attached a picture so you can see my current setup, from 2011. Would you have any other suggestions with your set up above with the Fractal case?

If you want something a bit 'flashier, then the only option with the SFF cases is the Corsair Crystal 280X.

It's almost short as it is high at 398mm x 276mm x 351mm...but you'd need to check the exact measurements of your cubby to see if it fits the 276mm width (which is only 17mm wider than your original Thermaltake Core V1 case).

The only other thing I can suggest, is finding a case you like both the size and aesthetics, and then get it delivered to PCS to fit your order into...HOWEVER, it is up to you to ensure all your components will fit in the case.

Exactly what it says...that the really cheap A320I-K motherboard (which isn't even in the option list) does not have wi-fi built in, and you'd have to pay extra for either a motherboard with wi-fi, or a wi-fi add-in card if you selected that motherboard.

However, the we've selected the Gigabyte A520i AC motherboard, so no need to worry.

H: up to 600 !!! Yipppee!!
W: 240mm max
D: 405mm max

Now all I need is a nice spec to go in it, like Tony's above, but for the tower case preferably £1000 or around that. Tony, can you nail down that spec again - getting a bit confused with all the previous options above.

Can't get it much below £1100 without removing the wifi/bluetooth card (-£19), halving the SSD size and reducing it's speed (-£50), or using a very poor motherboard (-£60).

I wouldn't recommend doing any of those cuts though!

OPTION 2 (without Windows)

The only way I can get it to £1006 without making those cuts, is if you have a computer that's being completely replaced...as you could use the Windows licence from that for the new machine, and save £100.

Thank you Tony! I definitely need Windows and Office as I'm using my son's 6th form account ATM and once he does his A levels, no more Windows.

Also, the wi-fi card is essential as I am online all the time wirelessly, unless this is different to a network card, but anyway, I really need it.

I will fork out the extra for this beautiful system - just going to mull over the cases.

P.S. I'm using Chrome at the moment.

Back in 2011, when I first bought my PC Specialist PC, the forum advised me to have two hard drives for performance.

The new PC configuration has only one - a 1TB Intel SSD Drive. Now, I'm a low usage user in that I mainly use Office, and online stuff, apps like Atticus for formatting, Spotify etc, so although I have a lot of artwork for my writing stored on my PC, in modern terms it's not using up a huge amount of space. Currently, I'm backing up essential Word documents to a USB stick ~(and I know there are a lot of haters of these things on here) - but my files again are so small, is it worth spending extra on 2nd hard drive to put Office on, for example?
