Possibly Putting in More RAM at a Later Date

If I purchase a laptop computer with 16 GB RAM comprising of two 8 GB sticks, if I then wanted to later on put more RAM in it, could I send it back to you (PC Specialist) to do this for me? Or is this impractical and I should get someone local to do it?

Cheers

They will do this for you, though you have to keep in mind your laptop might only take two modules (in which case it'll be 2x8GB modules), so you might not be able to add more.

also note that win 7 premium can only use 16gb ram.....

Can you expand on what you mean by your quote above please?

What about Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 8 Professional?

Can you not ask PC specialist to put in spare modules, even if you don't use them for the time being?

Cheers

Tom was just saying windows 7 home premium 64bit has a ram limit of 16GB.
These are the upper RAM limits for the different editions of Windows 7 64bit
Home Premium: 16GB
Professional: 192GB
Ultimate: 192GB

Physical Memory Limits: Windows 7
The following table specifies the limits on physical memory for Windows 7.
Version Limit on X64
Windows 7 Ultimate
192 GB
Windows 7 Enterprise
192 GB
Windows 7 Professional
192 GB
Windows 7 Home Premium
16 GB
Windows 7 Home Basic
8 GB

You need to check the laptop you buy has 4 ram slots.

If you put in 2x8gb then you can install another 2x8gb later to have 32gb as long as the laptop supports 4x8gb sticks of ram but you need windows 7 professional or above to use more than 16gb as the details from microsofts web site above shows.

I see what you mean now. Thanks.

What I was aiming to do was buy a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium on and then take the special offer of Windows 8 Professional and do a clean install of that. Is that possible and then I could put more RAM in at a later date?

Having said that, there is probably not a lot of difference in price between Premium and Professional.

Can someone definitively answer this question for me please?

If I buy a laptop with two x 8 GB ram sticks in their modules along with Windows 64-bit Home Premium Operating System, then I upgrade to Windows 64-bit 8 Professional with the special offer. Can I then put in more RAM (more 8 GB ram sticks)?

What I'm trying to say is; will there be the extra modules in the computer if I want to do this? If not, could I ask for extra modules to be fitted when it is being built by PC Specialist?

Cheers

Do you know which laptop you are wanting?

Looking through a few of the laptops on offer in the configurator PCS only seem to offer them with 16Gb (2 x 8Gb) ram sticks. This suggests to me that they may not be able to take additional RAM in the future. Your best bet would be to ask PCS sales for a more definite answer (or other people on the forums who own these laptops might be able answer).

The new vortex III /VIII elite offers 4 ram sticks (and therefore has 4 ram modules / slots), Skyfire II also offers 4 ram sticks in various combinations.

It will depend on two things, firstly the ram limits of windows 8,some sources say 512GB,but I'm not sure if an official figure has been released it may depend on if it's windows 8 or windows 8 pro.
Secondly it will depend on the laptop you select having four ram slots and being capable of handling 32GB ram.like the 17.3" Vortex III Elite.

The special offer is for Windows 8 Pro Version and the laptop I'm interested in is the 17.3" Optimus IV. In the configurator, it shows 24 GB Ram as the highest you can have. So if that is three 8 GB sticks, I am assuming there must be another slot.

Any ideas anyone?

The 17.3" Optimus IV has 3 ram slots.
In the "configure a laptop" section click on any laptop, then select "detailed specification"
scroll to "memory" this will give you details of memory type, number of modules and maximum supported memory.
