Possible Video card failure

I think the video card has fried itself.

Last night the PC hard crashed with a fizzing sound. I pulled the power cord out and checked there was no smoke! There wasn't.

I restarted it and the display was weird, purples, blues greens and fuzzy. The PC tried to start up but there was a windows error. Then it crashed. I restarted it and got as far as a windows repair screen (same fuzzy display) but then it crashed again.

Before I box it for return I'd like some opinions as to the probably route cause. Because of the windows error I am also concerned the SSD may have also failed.

Sadly it's a 11GB GeForce 1080Ti

Is this a PCSpecialist PC?

If so, could you post your config from your order page...

Yeah that looks like the GPU, you should be able to just RMA the GPU rather than the whole rig, that way you'll be back up and running in a couple of days, as they send you the new GPU and the courier takes the original one back

Remove the graphics card and ug the monitor into the motherboard, it will then use the iGPU. If it runs OK that way then it is the graphics card.
Thanks👍
I’ll plug the monitor into the motherboard. Just for info what exactly is “ug”?

OK been a while but now my period of grieving is over :-/

I did as advised and a) removed the graphics card and b) hooked up the display to the MOBO.

Computer works fine.

Now I need a replacement card. I'm thinking of a used 2080 Ti, as they seem to be only a little more expensive than used 1080Ti cards. My requirement is to be able to play Elite Dangerous in VR at the highest settings.

Any thoughts on where to source or should I just jump into Amazon/Ebay?

Er well the funny thing is that when I unplugged the 1080Ti it did come out quite easily. So for a laugh I plugged it back in and took it out which was a much firmer pull....

Plugged it back in, hooked it up and guess what?

IT WORKS FINE!

What an ass I am. But on the bright side my tendonitis is totally cured :D

Hmmmm.... from a brief hunt on the various marketplaces, the 2080ti is selling for an absolutely rediculous £900 to £1300. Plus, you have to be careful in the second hand market as there are an awful lot of crypto second hand cards being sold, and they will have been hammered.

Brand new, you can get a 3070 which will just about equal the 2080ti in performance generally but have substantially better RTX and DLSS capabilities thrown in. And from a reputable shop, they're in stock now for around £800

But you may even find that PCS will sell you a card cheaper than you can get in the shops, if you go to the upgrades section of your main PCS account, have a look in there at what prices they're offering, you may be surprised. I believe the 3070 is currently out of stock though.

Problem is that buying a used GPU is often a lottery.

Can you use the "upgrade" functionality on the PCS website to order a new 3070/3070 Ti GPU? It will be more expensive than second hand but typically cheaper than new standalone GPUs. For example for me to upgrade to a 3070 Ti costs £612.

Alternatively looks for a ex display GPU. Ebuyer has been offering out a lot recently.

The reason the second hand 2080ti is so expensive is:

A: they were extremely expensive cards new at around £1200

B: It was a top tier card vs the 3070 being high mid tier.

The gains in performance between the 2000 series and the 3000 series were significant, to the point where the performance of a £1200 card were equalled by a £500 card.

Ah OK thanks but my original card appears to work fine as per my post.

It was just loose!

Madness!
Well, that's a bit of a bonus!

You may find that it craps out again when under a gaming load, they're normally fine until a stress is put on them and then they start artifacting again.

You may equally find that you're absolutely fine and it was just a bad connection somewhere.

True. I ran the benchmark from Farcry 5 and it seemed fine at 125 fps in ultra settings.
