PCS Overclocked 3770k Unstable

Does anybody have a 3770k supplied by PCS overclocked?

Do you mind sharing the settings?

Mine came at 4.6Ghz but blue screens and still blue screens down at 4.1Ghz. At stock speeds it is fine.

I am using the Asus P8Z77 Pro/Thunderbolt.

Thanks.

I have, they have been pretty helpful, although they have quiet for a day. We are trying different settings but it still blue screens at 4.1.

I am thinking this should really have been picked up prior to dispatch as at 4.6 it would bs within an hour of use.

I've had a similar problem with my PC, see here https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?20644-Brand-new-oc-gaming-rig-issues
I returned the rig on Monday and now it should be with me again tomorrow hopefully, they claimed the CPU cooler was not seated right, who knows if it was or wasn't or if it was knocked in transit.
All I know is it wasn't right, right from new and soon as I get it tomorrow I'll be running prime 95 for an hour to see if the problem has been corrected.
If I were you I'd get straight back on to PCS and get it sent back to get looked at.

Interestingly I have the same cooler, I may check the seating but my temps don't go too high, it just blue screens after a few minutes of full load.

Thanks for the info.

Do you know the code that is displayed when it bluescreens? Might help you to narrow down what the problem is?

STOP: 0x00000124

I gather that means hardware, but I will download the kit to view the mini dump file this weekend and see if anything is in there.

This is likely to be caused by a hardware problem problem. This problem might be caused by a thermal issue. The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

Time to open her up and see how the cooler is seated....

Oh by the way, 'WhoCrashed' is a great dmp analyser too.

Thanks for that, I am still a bit sceptical as to how it passed QA.

I know it failed for some reason and was delayed for a few days before it was initially sent to me...

OK, hypothetically speaking - could a poor uneven layer of thermal paste be the issue? say if it was only covering 2/3 of the cpu?

WEI takes the cores up to around 54 degrees C each in stock setting - seems quite high to me (3.9Ghz )

generally with thermal paste less is better. I use a tiny drop on my cpu! just in the centre, a tiny little pea

It could be, but as NMEBowen has already said there is a good chance the original layer may not have cured correctly yet - you could always remove the heatsink and re-apply thermal paste yourself if you are confident doing so. I would get in touch with PCS first if you were going to do this (they might send you some Thermal Paste :))

I have the Overclocked 3770K here too, however my temps average between 35-45 degree's under light/average use, goes upto around 55-65 degree's under heavy load. I have a coolit liquid based cpu cooler in my rig, what cpu cooler are you using?

Really, mine go up to low 70s under full load in standard settings.

I have the Coolit Dual Rad cooler which I thought was more than capable.

Are you using software to change the Fan settings for your system, I changed from the default settings has they wasn't kicking in until 55-60 degree's. They now steadily increase has the temp increases, which keeps the temps at a more stable rate.

I have the Coolit Fatboy II here and I'm impressed with it :p

Has others have said though, the Coolit CPU block may not be seated correctly or may have been dislodged in transport. Call PCS and arrange an RMA explaining the issue and they should get it sorted.

I have a Noctua NH-D14 and my 3770K temps hit 70c+ on Prime95, this is on stock speed. 55-60 degrees is very impressive. Is 70c+ indication of the cooler not being seated properly?

Well I have reseated the cooler with new thermal paste but still have issues.

At 4.2Ghz it gets up to 80 degrees, running higher speeds and the temps get hotter and it blue screens.

I did RMA the PC and it came back with the bios set to 4.6Ghz but actually only running at 4.2 - some kind of bug in the bios locks the multiplier after a few changes so it needs to be hard reset. Needless to say the minute I loaded the 4.6 profile it blue screened again.

3 months on and I still don't have the rated speed I paid for :(
