PC vs PS4 Plus

I have an urge to get back into gaming but am debating whether to stick with PC or for the first time in my life try a console. I'd be interested to hear peoples thoughts. I would not be an avid gamer, just occasional but still want to play the latest games to a good spec (type I would buy would be Far Cry 4, GTA5, Civ 5, Mafia II spring to mind)

So here are a few considerations for my decision

1) I specced up a PC and it came to £900 - £1000 - the PC I own now is adequate for everything I do apart from gaming so it's a big outlay to play games. I'm not interested in playing games at the absolute max fps so long as it looks great and plays well.

2) The new PS4 Pro is only around £350 and it looks a damn fine machine.

3) Another consideration is that I hate console controllers. I am a mouse + keyboard man although maybe I can get used to a controller.

Any thoughts ?

I use my pc more, my ps4 is a door stop until the next decent exclusive comes out,
that being said some of the ps4 exclusives coming out do look epic.
-God of war 4
-days gone
-event horizon dawn or something like that
- the last guardian
- spider-man
- gravity rush 2
-Death stranding
- detroit become human
- hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Thanks Drunken Monkey. I'd be interested to know why your PS4 is a doorstop and you use your PC ? Are the games simply not as good ? Is it the controllers ? Not graphically good enough ?

With the budget in mind I don't think you'll beat the new PS4. For your budget you can have the PS4, games, accessories AND the new PSVR headset, etc. It looks absolutely brilliant for the money.

Control is always going to be 2nd best but for pure pick up and play you can't beat a console IMO. I've recently ordered a top end laptop that'll play just about every game but I still have my PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS Vita, PSP, DS, etc, etc, etc :D

I'm also not much of a gamer though so I just casually get into them.

While it's not encouraged to give specific advice on self-builds, if you have a perfectly functional PC you might want to explore whether you could upgrade it (add a GPU or something) to enable it to run games. A forum like Tom's Hardware would be a good place to discuss that.

Also the PC you specced up isn't really a fair comparison with a console in terms of price because you've loaded it up with far more than you need for gaming: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...£1000-Is-this-a-good-spec&p=371809#post371809 especially:
1[SUP]st[/SUP] Hard Disk
240GB BiWIN 2.5" SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 559MB/sR | 514MB/sW)
2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Hard Disk
5TB SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 128MB CACHE

So presumably you'd be buying the PC to do other things than just gaming. You really don't need 5tb for gaming unless you're gaming at 4k res and saving a lot of high quality gameplay videos I suppose. And you're not doing that. :)

If you're buying a PC anyway to do things other than just gaming, adding a GPU to turn it into a gaming PC is more cost-effective than buying a PC to do non-gaming things and buying a console. If you just the PC for gaming, save yourself £100 with a smaller HDD, get a cheaper case, etc, then review the graphical fidelity and performance available in PC vs PS4, and the relative costs, and make a decision based on that.

To be honest some ps4 games put my pc to shame, like uncharted 4, the order 1886. However the rest look like the screens covered in vaseline. The controllers fine. I just prefer pc gaming in general. Higher framerates, cheaper games, arguably better community, vastly better visuals (shoddy ports aside). Saying that when it comes down to it and in it for the games, and unfortunately sony hates me and won't me play their exclusives on pc.

I just picked up a device called a xim 4 which allows you to use keyboard and mouse with the ps4 and 3 and Xbox 360 and one.

For any of you wanting away with the controller but desperate to play exclusives it's well worth it.
