PC Spec Advice

Considering this spec for a new gaming PC. Monitors can be upgraded if required - currently using a 1 x SAMSUNG LC24RG50FQUXEN Full HD 24" Curved LED Monitor.

Looking for the PC to be good for games now and have some longevity without the requirement to upgrade. (favourite game at minute is Empyrion Galactic Survival - but think that this should be more than enough - lol)

Advice would be welcome - looking to keep the cost at or below £1900.

Was unsure on graphics cards to go for - NVIDIA vs AMD.
And the whole power / cooling requirements / case air flow is a new one for me since a last ventured into custom builds so hope what i am proposing is suitable.

Hi there! I think the main change I'd make with this build is the platform. Intel seems to have lost their way a bit recently while AMD has gone from strength to strength. This thread is well worth a read if you're curious as to why. Assuming we're happy to go down the AMD route, this is the spec I'd recommend.

You'll also notice I've left a chunk of the budget off the top. For the graphics card I've selected, 1080p 144hz would be rather undemanding for the card so I'd recommend picking up a 1440p 144hz monitor to pair nicely with the GPU. Something like the AOC CQ27G2U or Samsung G5 are our forum favourites. If you planned to use a seperate budget for a monitor upgrade, let us know and we can adjust the spec accordingly!

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Case
COOLERMASTER MASTERBOX TD500 MESH ARGB GAMING CASE Case with a bit more airflow than the K500
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Six Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.6GHz/35MB CACHE/AM4) Fantastic Gaming CPU from AMD's lineup
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B550-PLUS WiFi (DDR4, USB 3.2, 6Gb/s) - ARGB Ready! The motherboard you'll want to pair with the 5600X
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB) AMD loves fast RAM so gone for a set of 3200mhz. Weirdly the RGB stuff is slightly cheaper than the non-RGB right now
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3060 Ti - HDMI, DP, LHR NVIDIA is still ahead in the graphics game. The 3060TI is a fantastic entry into 1440p gaming and will do you nicely (speaking from personal experience ;) )
1st Storage Drive

Processor Cooling
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler Black Edition The 5600X is not a very demanding CPU temperatrue wise so the 212 will do a perfect job of cooling it
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING Standard thermal paste will be just fine

Morning, thanks very much for the feedback and the link - i'll try and digest that this afternoon. The budget is solely for the PC and not the monitor(s).
Couple of questions if you don't mind
1- Why two different SSDs and not one larger drive?
2- Does the does the motherboard allow for upgrade to Ryzen 7 or 9 in future?
3- 16GB RAM rather than 32 GB?

Cheers
Steve

2 drives are one for your operating system and some smaller programs that would benefit from its faster speeds and a slower ( but still very fast ) m.2 for games if you have any issues with windows you can then reinstall it on its separate drive while not losing all the games etc as that would be on its own drive

Most games dont use more then 16gb of ram unless its microsoft flight simulator or heavily modded games for instance Empyrion Galactic Survival rarely will go above 8gb so you have double what that game would require with 16gb

I think you can upgrade to a ryzen 7 and 9 cpu with that motherboard in future but there are better options to pick from if thats what you wanted to do

There is nothing to stop you upgrading to 7 or 9 series CPU with any B550 board. They are compatible and many pre-built systems with 5800X and 5900X CPUs come with B550 boards.

The issue is whether a specific B550 board will be able to make the most of the CPU without thermal issues such as throttling coming into play and whether the cooling solution would be adequate. For lower power CPUs, such as the Ryzen 9 5900 (which is not currently available to retail but is available to OEMs) or 5700G, you can pair it with a lower end B550 board and a low-end cooler, same as for the 5600X.

For a hotter chip such as the 5800X/5900X, however, you will definately want more than the stock cooler (probably an AIO like the H100i/H115i) and you might also want a board with better VRMs (the B550 Rog Strix, X570 TUF, X570 Rog Strix etc). There are also some performance benefits of going for X570 boards over B550, albeit in many real world scenarios those benefits are not currently material.

I absolutely agree with all of this, except to say that, from the reviews I've seen online, the Tuf B550 (all the ATX variants) will be just fine for the 5800X and 5900X. I'm not saying I wouldn't get a better board now if I was getting one of those chips, but you needn't worry about whether the board will support an upgrade: it will. (Also almost certainly true of to Zen3 refresh Ryzen chips coming next year.)

I like the idea of 2 SSD drives - something I can't believe I didn't consider as I have done it in the past (with HDD)s- definitely something I will keep for the new spec - thanks for that great bit of advice.

Does the Ryzen 5 5600X outperform the Ryzen 7 3800X or is the 5 5600X better value for money?
Given I would like to not have to upgrade the computer for a few years, is it worth pre-investing the extra money in the Ryzen 7 5800X or do you think that there little benefit.
Note - that will probably swing the decision to whether to upgrade to the TUF X570 (plus additional cooling) rather than the B550.

Given some reviews at present state that the memory and processing on the graphics card becomes the bottleneck for running games, is the 3060 TI 8GB still a good choice vs the 6700 XT.

Thank you to all the comments and feedback I have received so far - trying to decide on a computer spec is a minefield of options and there is no best route / option to choose - I appreciate everything that has been posted so far. It is difficult trying to understand the best value for money and where to draw the line on the spec vs cost argument. It is great that so many of your are prepared to share you knowledge and advice to help guide me.

The 5600X will outperform the 3800X in most scenarios. It’s superior in single threaded performance, which is what you want in a gaming PC. If you can afford the 5800X, it would be a worthwhile investment. The new consoles are eight core machines so it would let you keep pace with newer titles.

I’d go with the 3060Ti, whilst AMDs new cards are infinitely better than their last gen efforts I still think Nvidia have the edge 🙂👍

And even if AMD are trading blows in terms of raw performance, Nvidia's cards are ahead in terms of features (DLSS, Nvenc, RTX Voice).

The 3060 Ti may seem a "mid range" GPU but it's got the same performance as a 2080 Super. The vast bulk of the PC gaming community doesn't have that sort of performance now and probably won't for two years ... possibly more if the GPU pricing stays this high!

So I'd only spend more money now if you have the monitor to utilize that additional performance. If your plan is to get a 27" 1440p, then the 3060 Ti is fairly ideal, perhaps the 3070 if you want. If you plan to buy a 34" Ultrawide then it might be worth looking at the 3070 or 3070 Ti. Go 4K and you might need a 3080. You really need to nail down the monitor to inform the GPU choice.

Basically, with GPUs if you don't need the performance now, don't buy the performance now. The best form of GPU future proofing is to save the money for the next GPU you buy in say three years time.

Ok thanks for the advice - final question TUF B550 or TUF X570?
For the 5600X the Tuf B550 is probably the best option. If you were to go for the 5800X instead, then it would be well worth considering the X570. But presuming you don't need X570's features (basically more PCIe 4.0 lanes), the B550 will actually be better for you.

This is probably the spec i will now go for

What? Future upgrade options? I don’t understand what you’re going for here. A 5950X for a gaming build on a TUF Gaming B550 motherboard does not a good combo make…
