Morning all,

I'm finally getting broadband installed tomorrow so I can get gaming!

However, upon looking at some popular titles like BF3 and MW3 the reviews are just terrible, few things stood out like installation takes a long time, game designers requesting permission to access personal information, games always freezing, having to sign up online before playing... Origin popped up a lot as well negatively.

I've been a PS3 player for years and still am and have had no problems with any issues like this.

Can you guys recommend any PC games that I am not going to have any problems with. I don't mind downloadable online gaming either if there are any decent titles out there.

Thanks

Origin & Steam only look at your hardware and scans for games you've got installed, nothing personal. I have both BF3 (On Origin) & MW3 (On Steam) & I can tell you I've had literally no problems what so ever with either of them.

Origin & Steam don't use installations either, they download, then the first time you run them they will install anything it needs like Direct X, or .net framework etc etc.

If you've never PC gamed before you will be MUCH happier with loading times than on PS3, when I saw how long it took to load Skyrim everytime you entered a new area on Xbox 360 I felt sick! BF3 for example, loads atleast 5 times quicker on my PC than it does on my PS3.

Pfft, installation takes a long time? So what, so does downloading, waiting for the bus. I dont understand how people can say that thats a problem its a one time thing then its done. Never had any freezing problems with battlefield and it doesnt take any personal info.

Ok thanks, I shall purchase them tomorrow in that case!

Cheapest place to buy these titles?

I just looked on steam at fm2012 and it's 19.99 yet it's 11.40 on play.com

Why is steam so much more expensive.

Convenience, if you reformat or whatever you can just download Steam again and it's there to download again straight away, no need to mess about looking for whats potentially a lost or damaged disk, it also makes sure your game is upto date.

Wait till Steam Summer / Winter sales, you'll soon change your mind about who's the cheapest ha. 75% off? Yess please!

While steam and origin may not take personal information, they are still an added hassle that I do not really want to deal with. What happened to the good old days of getting a game, installing it, maybe having to input a CD key and then immediately start playing?

may have something to do with the capacity of CD's being too low? Example, BF3 is like 25gb or something silly!

installation takes a long time

A long time? For BF3? It took me less than 30 minutes on the machine in my sig, which is good considering how fantastic the graphics are.

game designers requesting permission to access personal information

The hardware in your PC and what games you play. It's hardly personal and STEAM does it too, they just allow you to opt-out.

games always freezing

250 hours of BF3 and no freezes so far. Just the usual Punkbuster kicking me off servers for not manually updating (you'd think they'd have fixed the automatic updater after at least 10 years of problems).

having to sign up online before playing

That's hardly a new thing... MMO's have been doing it for like 15 years. A few other games did it for as long as that as well.

Yes... BF3 lol. If you want it get it.

Have to admit I still look at comments about game loading times with a wry grin.

Anyone remember loading games on a Commodore 64? Then I got a floppy drive for it and was in heaven, still 5 minutes wasn't a long time to wait for Uridium or The Sentinel to load....

Yep HelBic the good old days of tapes and 5 1/4 inch floppies, was so nice to go to the quicker load times, O and the games where if you died you had to reload the entire game.

Ouch Enazel, I'd forgotten about that. Yep. That sucked.

Also, I used to buy the mags with the games listings in them. half the time you'd spend hours typing them in for the system to crash prior to saving, so you'd have to start all over again.

Halcyon days? I'm starting to think that maybe they weren't so good after all.

Mind you, if it's not an FPS then pretty much all games today are graphics led. It would ne good to see something original come out, but then when they've tried, they've pretty much failed. With the notable exception of Hard Rain. This was excellent but in reality it was good because the story was good. The gameplay itself was pretty much non existant.

Here's a recommendation, but it's a bit old - Planescape: Torment from 1999.

Yes, it's aged. Yes, it's 2D. Yes, it's got more text than a novel by Stephen King in it. It's also one of the most whimsically awesome games of all time ever. It's a thinking game rather than a twitching game though. "What can change the nature of a man" and all that.

It's on GOG for very little money right now.

Right, that's enough internetting for me. Let's get back to Skyrim (which is kinda like the polar opposite of Torment - huge game world, but characters little more than signposts and character development little more than whatever has the most plusses.)

Well, are you enjoying it? :)

I like the Karkand 24/7 servers personally with 64 players. It's a good map. Just the right size, not too small like some of the other maps and it can go either way whereas some of the maps almost always end up in a certain side gaining victory every time. Like Metro where the Russians win almost 100% of the time.

It's ok, takes some time getting used to.

Still trying to establish how to get attachments quickly. Seems to be very slow unlike COD where it's a lot simpler to see.

No weapon stats either?
