PC crashing BSOD

Over last few weeks ive been in contact with support as my PC just crashes randomly.
When i play games or just watch videos etc, all BSOD error messages vary.

I recently RESET my PC and done windows update, for a few days it has been fine but i have just had another BSOD.
With error DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Failed: afd.sys.

I have check armour create everything is update to date, barely installed anything software wise.
All windows updates done. Win version 1909 build 18363.1082
At the start of all this i thought it could be memory and the windows memory diagnostic tool stated their was a hardware issue??

Really stuck on what to try, really want it all sorted before my warranty runs out. Havent even had the PC long.

here is the minidump PCS requested
https://easyupload.io/zcpykz - As i mentioned ive had loads of different error and i sent them 5 of my previous ones.
This is the latest.

Just so you know, none of us work for PCS, if PCS have requested that dump file, they won’t receive it the rough the forum.

We can take a look as well of course.

That BSOD tends to mean driver incompatibility.

A windows reset won’t actually do anything, it will leave all the same issues behind, you need to do a clean install with an image from Microsoft:

Follow option one:

And don’t use armour crate to install drivers, let windows update source everything apart from graphics which are direct from nvidia.

Oh okay thank you, i have sent it to them tonight so hopefully get a response soon.
If i do a clean install will it ask me for an activation key because im not sure where it is ??

Thanks

Windows 10 doesn’t have a key, it’s ties to the BIOS so it automatically registers.

Hi, the link below you should now see minidump

Strange thing happened when i booted uo my machine today.
it booted but after 5 minutes it crashed BSOD then half the screen went black??
Never had that before.

Ive added the mini dumps for that crash aswell.
I tried attaching a photo of what my screen looked like but its too large apparently.

The BSOD Doctor
The first minidump (092820-13375-01.dmp) is an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL failure which was caused by the afunix.sys driver, this is a Windows driver (not third-party) that implements the Unix secure socket. The stack trace shows that it's actually afd.sys (the WinSock driver) that was in control at the time of the failure (it will have been called afunix.sys). Since these are both Windows drivers it's less likely the drivers themselves are at fault, it's more likely to be whatever was calling afunix.sys. The thread that failed was part of a process running WoW.exe, so it's most likely that WoW is the cause of the problem and it's something to do with secure Internet comms...?

The second minidump (092820-13781-01.dmp) is a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE failure which was caused by the pci.sys driver, this is part of the Windows 'plug and play' feature. This BSOD happens because a driver (pci.sys in this case) held a power interrupt request packet for too long. It's unlikely this is a fault of pci.sys, more likely whatever is calling it, or a plug-and-play device malfunctioning. The owning process is not identifiable in the dump sadly. The driver object list contains a lot of 'InvalidDeviceRequest' errors however, so perhaps it's a hardware issue?

The third minidump (092920-13171-01.dmp) is an UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP failure, in this case it's because an exception occured as the exception handler was handling a prior exception. The stack trace shows the nvlddmkm.sys as the driver in question, this is the Nvidia graphics driver. The owning process is crss.exe which is the user mode component of Windows and it's vanishingly unlikely there is an error in there. Nvidia graphic driver errors are certainly not unknown.

The fourth dump trace (092920-14125-01.dmp) is another DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE also caused by the pci.sys driver. It's pretty much identical to the second minidump. The owning process is not identifiable in this dump either.

This is an unusual collection of three failure types that don't seem to have anything in common. In cases like this the best courses of action are these....

1. Download Memtest and run it on your RAM overnight. This free version only does 4 iterations of the various tests but that's usually good enough. If there is even a single error you need to replace your RAM.

2. Unplug all external devices except the mouse, keyboard and monitor. (Until you've either proven that things are working or proven that they're not).

3. Do a clean install of Windows from bootable media. Delete all existing UEFI partitions and allow Windows Update to install all drivers.

Then see how things go. Try not to install more software than you actually need so that you don't inadvertently reinstall the problem. If you get BSODs in that state you most likely have a hardware issue.

Hi,

oh wow thanks for all the information and the break down.
when i try click on memtest its 'Server not found' is this meant to be a download?

Once i have done the cleant install of Windows, do you think i should download of Wow or not?? How can a game cause such errors and crashes.
Or would you suggest just run the PC with videos etc and see how it get on for a few days?

ATM all i have installed in firefox and Wow but then again i didnt do a clean install i only done a reset so.

No problem, I love analysing memory dumps. :)

It's a link to the Memtest website from where you can download it. It might be wise to use another PC to download Memtest and make the bootable USB you need to run it.

I would run it without WoW for a day or two, but try and make it fail in that time. If it won't fail without WoW then install WoW and see how it is then.

You absolutely need a clean install of WIndows, the Reset feature is useless when trying to troubleshoot problems because it uses the existing libraries.

Use the Windows Media Creation Tool to make a bootable USB with the latest version of Windows and boot that USB stick., Choose a Custom Install and delete all existing UEFI partitions; there are 4 (EFI, MSR, Recovery, and System - if there is more than one Recovery partition delete them all) then click the Next button, the installer will do the rest. Once the initial setup is completed (language, region, userid, etc.) run WIndows Update repeatedly (even across reboots) until no more updates are found.

There are no issues with version 2004. That's the version the Media Creation Tool will download. And that's the version you should install. :)

Will I need that update installed before I use the creation tool to re-install windows?

I think it's a no but just to make sure.
I'm not using my PC at the moment so I'm running the memtest, all good so far...

No. You can download 2004 via the Media Creation Tool from any PC, regardless of the Windows version.

Thanks for all the info.
Hopefully no errors will display and I'll do a clean install. Hoping this will resolve all my issues. I'll let you guys know.

Memtest came back with no errors so i am going to reinstall windows.
I have ran media creation but i have options
'Upgrade this PC' OR 'Create installation media for another PC' ?? which one do i pick...
