PC Crashing and Rebooting.

Hmm odd on here chaps.

So, PC is just suddenly shutting down instantly and then restarting. I get a message on restart which says something along the lines of "asus anti surge shut down to protect ...."

I can't read the whole message, its only on the screen for a few seconds.

Started a few weeks ago, maybe since i added my second 680. Although I'm certain its not the card that's causing the problem.

Not sure if the PSU is faulty? or the motherboard? But its damn annoying, tends to be random, doesnt happen during any specific tasks.

Any ideas?

This was happening to a lot of folk not too long ago, I think the general consensus was to switch off the anti surge protection... but I still don't think thats 100% the right thing to do. Especially if its just started happening. I'll see if I can find some of the previous threads about it and I'll post the links here.

thanks dude, yeah looks like there are alot of threads on other forums. I don't think its the PSU to be honest, as far as I know Corsair make pretty good PSU's.

Probably the motherboard, as its always popping up with warning messages. I read about disabling the anti surge, but not sure if its a good idea to disable something that's designed to protect the machine.

If your plugging the computer into a surge protector I think you could safely switch the Asus surge protection off in bios,in fact I'm sure I read somewhere Asus recommending to switch it off as it's a bit over sensitive, mind you there's always the chance there might be a genuine issue.

thanks for the reply Vanthus, yeah im using some surge protection extension lead. Although not sure if its very good.

anyone know if you can test a psu?

Depends, we normally suggest to turn off antisurge if you have a GPU that your PSU can cope with . Not sure how much power the EVGA GTX 680 SuperOced.

I had two palit 580's on this PSU which are heavier on the juice than the 680's are. never had this issue when using the 580's. But it rarely crashes/shuts down when gaming. I'm pretty sure its only happened once when gaming, most of the time its just when doing normal stuff on windows.

Do you think the PSU isnt big enough? Faulty or just Asus anti surge being oversensitive?

Just happened again, when i was restarting the PC after going in the BIOS. Couldnt find the asus anti surge thing to turn it off do didnt bother. But did grab some screens.

I remember you complaining from basically when i first met you that your mobo was throwing up error messages and warnings... Is there any chance that it's only now kicking up a fuss?

It's a slim chance, but a chance non-the-less!

My suggestion, new mobo, new gpu's, new ssd's, new cpu, new psu and case!

thanks for the reply. N yes the mobo has always been throwing up warnings. But this is a relatively new issue.

Can't really afford to replace the mobo which would require a new cpu. Plus it might not even be the motherboard.

Although, i'm doubtful that the Corsair PSU is faulty.

edit - put in a ticket with Corsair, so will see what they say.

Some people in tomshardware suggest disabling the asus surge protection, on the other hand other people are stating its signs of an "unstable PSU"

damn its still happening :(

I checked that everything is plugged in fine. Which it is.

Still getting crashes and restarts as before. Asus Suite and the bios said that my the 3.3 rail on my PSU was about 2.90 or something. Although we all know not to trust asus suite.

Looking around, the only way to test a PSU is with a Multimeter. Which I don't have lol.

hey,

I don't get any blue screens. It just instantly shuts down then restarts.

I sent a message to PCS, got a reply today. (less than 24hours btw)

I was told to disable the Asus Anti Surge, and if it keeps happening after that then get back to them.

Ok good luck just let you know I had that problem turned out to be psu but I also think that it effected my motherboard as well

thanks,

hmm, how did it effect your board aswell? Did you turn off the anti surge?

I'm going to test the PSu with a multimeter before i turn that protection off. For all I know, the PSU could be faulty and turning off that protection might toast my board, cpu, ram, gpu's etc etc. So, rather not take that chance just yet.

So mine was weird because first of all my pc would restart without warning and it had nothing showing on the screen to say what it was then after a few restarts it then said pc shut down due to anti surge protection.
So i turned off antisurge in bios as alot off people was having problems with it although I was also using a anti surge extension lead not a cheap one cost about £30 the pc would still restart so I got told to send the motherboard to them cos it started saying blue screen on restart.

Sent motherboard off when I eventually got motherboard back and connected up the power supply it still had problems wouldn't boot up straight away then sometimes I could surf the net for about an hour or so and the it would shut down and sometimes when I turn on pc it would go to switch on but straight away switch off
