Hey everyone. So, recently I decided that I miss having a gaming rig at University, so I decided to look over my accounts after receiving a very welcome bursary, and thought that combining a new laptop and gaming device in one would be a good idea. So, I did some shopping around and found that the best bang for my buck in regard to a mid range gaming laptop lay with PC Specialists Optimus V from the review page.

Great. The spec looks wonderful; the pricing, a mere £879. However, I have been reading in places about the temperatures of the GPU shooting up to above 90 and even hitting 97 degrees in the Clevo housing; therefore I have two questions in relation to that.
Firstly, to any owners of an Optimus V 17", do you experience any issues with your thermals, and are you running standard paste, upgraded PCS paste, or your own custom paste job.
Secondly, would it void my warranty in any way to disassemble the machine and apply my own paste onto the components as I do have some good quality arctic silver at hand.

Also, would anyone be on hand to comment on the overall build quality of the device. I have read up that it's sturdy, but feels cheap to the touch. The quality of the feel of the materials really isn't important to me, but what is, is sturdiness. My current laptop, on which I am writing on, is practically falling apart. The left hinge twists in the chassis every time I open and close the laptop; causing the bottom to pry itself away from the top continually. Eventually, the casing will snap altogether and leave me with a laptop that only has right hand side support for the screen.

So, I post it to you. Will I ever need to worry about these extreme issues with a laptop like the Optimus V?

Now, onto my "wait" section. I appear to be a patient guy, however, the anticipation of receiving a laptop that not only would enable me to enjoy my Steam library fully again, but also enable me to actually move my laptop without risk of breaking it seems to make me somewhat impatient. So, I ask you, fellow men. Should I be concerned that at the 9th working day of production, my order is still on the "Pre-Production" phase, despite entering it on the 15th? Or shall I simply try to find a way to relax, and enjoy the wait.

And lastly, what coping methods would you guys recommend to me for getting through this painful wait? The weekends are the worst as there is 0 progress happening to my order, due to it not being a working day.

you don't give a 'price' that you can comfortably afford. I'm not a 'gamer', but I am sure you will get loads of help. But, an expenditure is required before 'advice' .

apologies...I have re-read and noticed £870.

The peeps who know will prob be working the specs out now!

The advice I am seeking here is retrospective as the order has already been placed.

okey doke - I am unable to advice. But why would you want to ask, after placing an order? Surely, if someone came up with a diff spec, that would cause an anxious state with you - as you are at a point where you are unable to change?

If it helps (I'm a very old woman ha ha)...I don't game (no ha ha's). I have just bought a 17.3 Vortex IV; Haswell 4700 CPU; 16gb RAM; blu ray 6 x (I am unhappy with regards to the low speed); NVidia geoforce 3gb GPU; 120gb SSD; 750gb 7200rpm; ...& my wifi, I upgraded to the next bandwith..

And, just take deep breaths, carry on with life & wait! When your 'item' is delivered it will be well packaged with care :D

I waited approx. 30 days- but I knew that would be the case, even tho' I was hoping it would be earlier.

All the best, I'm sure you will be well pleased :D

The spec I have ordered is a Review spec, therefore it's not customisable at the price I payed for it anyway. I am happy with the parts in this build, and am simply inquiring about other aspects.

Due to your line of questioning I feel that you haven't finished reading my entire post. I do ask some questions quite clearly toward the end of the passage, at which I seek to find the answers from existing owners, or people with experience of the product.

I apologise with regards to being unable to comprehend your latter prose. However, I certainly agree that the 'review specs' are undoubtly a good buy :D

mmm..your last question was 'how do I cope with waiting' (sic) I answered that...deep breaths & there's a life beyond computing (I didn't put it as brunt in my post)

I posted I was unable to give advice on that particular matter.

Hey there Matrix :D
I bought an Optimus V 17.3 (with thermal paste) a little over a year ago, and I can tell you that it is sturdily built, does not feel cheap at all (It's actually really quite weighty), and if you're not used to a 17 inch laptop screen I imagine you will be impressed by the quality of both build and resolution.

The one worry I always had with this laptop was the heat, but I didn't notice the rising heats until about 5 months ago; whether that was because I wasn't paying attention or it needed re-pasting I'm not sure. I never did a temp check, but the surface of the laptop above the keyboard/speakers on the right hand side seemed to get very, very hot. Burning, occasionally, after extended amounts of time gaming, so that might be something to watch out for. As for opening up the laptop, I know that you can get to the underside of the motherboard without breaking the warranty seal, but opening the laptop right up will void it. I have no experience whatsoever with applying thermal paste so I guess that ones on your own discovery.

Everything in your spec aside from RAM and Processor (which is the same as mine), is better than what I bought by a touch, but the one thing I regret doing is buying the 2.4 i7 quadcore instead of going for an i5 with a higher processing speed, but I guess that all depends on personal preference and what you'll be using it for.

I waited a solid 25-30 days, but that's because I actually ordered an Optimus III but missed the last of the final batch, which turns out was lucky because I was able to upgrade my graphics card and sound system. The wait was extended because they had to order in new wireless cards.

In your case, I think I read something about PCS overcoming a backlog quite now because of a primary supplier letting them down, and student build and support work. I wouldn't worry over it, you'll get your beauty soon enough. In the meantime, watch alot of tv, sleep alot, eat alot. Hey, you could even do some uni work ;)

I'm sure you and her will have some great times together, take care of eachother ;) If you have any more questions at all feel free to PM any time, I'm on quite a lot for now as I'm currently waiting on a PM from support about my HDD.

This bemuses me a little. Absolutely people need to have patience and some overreact - on the other hand the guys paying near enough a grand and your saying basically after that he can just wait anywhere from 11-30 days and should be just grateful when or if it turns up in that time?

I don't think that is what she meant but it is in the T&C (up to 30 working days) that you accept before placing your order. Unfortunately fast track is not available at the moment but you can always use it if you are in a rush.

Hey Harry,
That's great to hear. I'm glad that your order process went well. And I am semi aware of the product issues PCS may be having. It would be nice to be officially notified by default if this affects my order in any way though. But I am happy to live through the wait.

And yeah, people need patience, especially if you're going to order a laptop that needs to be built first. If you don't want to wait, get one ready assembled!

I will definitely be looking at the thermals on the laptop when I receive it anyway. I was simply inquiring about the warranty as it's actually simple to take off the heatsink and do a repaste job. You can easily drop your temps by at least 5-10 degrees on paste application alone, as usually ready applied stuff is far too messy for what it is functioning to do. But if this voids my warranty I will avoid it.

Thanks for the responses. :)

The warranty will be voided if you cause damage to the laptop while doing the repaste. Opening the laptop doesn't void your warranty.

I tend to take extreme care and know what I'm doing when it comes to basic disassembly and reassembly. I won't do this if the stock thermal job serves me fine, only if I encounter some issues will I bother to go down this route anyway.

I just like to plan for eventualities.
