Office / Home pc to last a few years

Hi,

Looking for a pc that will be fine for 3-4 years at least. Just needs to run ms office, browsing web etc, no games. However, want it to run fast.

Is the i5-7400 overkill for this? As cheaper the better...

Thanks.

An i5 is probably a good idea if you're keeping it for a good few years and will be using it fairly intensively. I'd probably suggest the Titan CPU cooler as the stock Intel one isn't particularly quiet, and if you had the budget an SSD would greatly speed up day to day use of the PC and help with productivity.

You may want to be sure you've explored your options including off-the-shelf PCs from in case you find something with the same kind of spec (i5, 8gb RAM, HDD) for a bit less.

Hi,

Now that the Ryzen 5 chip is out there is a credible alternative to the i5. For example this is a bit more money but has a decent, quiet aftermarket CPU cooler: -

The Ryzen 5 1400 has 4 cores but also has hyper-threading. This means the Ryzen outperforms the i5 7400 when using all of the cores. Passmark score of 8755 vs 7437.

This option also gets you a superior motherboard which has a USB 3.1 socket on the back. This is much faster and more stable than USB 3.0 and offers future proofing for when you probably will have USB 3.1 memory sticks and external hard drives. The board also supports M.2 SATA, which means you could get a small M.2 SATA chip for your OS and programs. This adds to the cost but improves boot times and general speed when opening programs. If you didn't opt for one now you could add one in the future.

I've kept to a basic case to save money but there are much nicer ones for not a huge price increase. This basic one does at least have one front facing USB 3.0 port though.
