Octane 3, trying out bf1 beta

So received my beast yesterday.

After a day of setting up and downloading, I finally tried her out on the BF1 beta.

I am more than impressed Have played for a couple of hours and the fans kicked in at 60° at 80% which is the default. Noise wasn't intrusive and the sounds of the game tended to cover the fan noise anyway. I am using the Octane on a laptop cooler, so it does help for a few degrees. The game itself is as expected, freakin awesome! Game play and detail is notched up from bf4. As I say, only played a couple of hours, but first impressions, I will be getting this game. Didn't notice any lag or delay and was playing in a game of 55 vs 50 (only realised so many playing at the end of the game)

Like to thank PCS for a painless process in ordering and received delivery within 5 working days. (I haven't opted for a 4k screen, so no delay there) If I want 4k, I'll hook it up to the tv once the Mrs is on a late shift

I know it's only been a day, but as far as gaming laptops go, I am more than impressed. Using it as I type and the keyboard is actually really good, keys have good travel and response. The trackpad is also responsive, decent separate buttons and a new style fingerprint scanner in the top left corner of the t-pad.

Only hotspots I noticed are near the rear vents as expected. Keyboard didn't get hot, neither did the track pad but I use a mouse for gaming so no probs there.

Will add some pics later and update as I find out more from using it.

If you have the budget, I would recommend.

Frame rates on BF1 stayed in the mid 70's

Looking forward to the pics. Did you notice the FPS you were hitting with it? I'm not sure if the beta will provide a realistic idea of performance?

Frame rates seemed to stick around 75fps, assuming this is down to g-sync keeping things in check. It runs really smooth. Spent some time as a gunner in the back of a bi-plane and the only thing stuttering was the guy flying lol. It may be limited as it's beta like you say, but still runs well.

The laptop is a good looking thing imo, nothing about it screams gaming laptop, the only clue is the vents on the back.

Cheers Hewhoist, was contemplating the 1080,but the extra £££ was a bit of a stretch for my wallet. Assuming you get 20/30% performance with the 1080,you'll breeze anything you throw at it for some time.

That's the hope performance wise. Hope the temps stay as good as yours. The 1070 is a great card. Can't believe we are owning laptops with very little difference graphically from desktops. Wish they'd ship mine already

And compared to a desk top...no noticeable difference these days really. Know the upgradeability of a desktop and all that, but still.

Yeah this will be the laptop I hoped the last one would be. Still sold it for £800 last week and bought it for £1200 16 months ago so I'm not complaining there. Just don't have a machine at all atm very inconvenient. I used to think my old pcs machines fans didn't run enough lol but temps were always good. Looking forward to seeing how this one performs. Really thought there would be more reviews by now of it

After all the positive reviews I've read about the Octane I've decided to change my order from Defiance to the Octane 17" 1080p screen. A very similar spec to yours Gavdee, but a i5 6600K and GTX 1080. I wasn't that bothered about getting 4k so went for the 1080p. How are you finding the screen Gavdee? I was a little concerned after ordering it to find out via other threads that they might be introducing a 120hz version sometime soon. How are you finding it at 60hz? I really hope the screen looks nice!!

In all honesty, the screen is really good and sharp. Can't compare to 120hz although I was looking for these when looking for a laptop. Noticed that a well known laptop maker was offering these a few weeks back, whether they actually have stock or not is a different matter. The screen actually shows up as being 75hz, so a slight bonus there to what was expected.

I've played a few hours of Rocket League, along with the BF1 beta when that was running and a few games of battlefront. I honestly can't complain. The 1070 handles everything well, fps in the 60/70's mark when it's kicking off and no tearing that I've noticed.

Sure that the 1080 will push the performance up 20/30% over the 1070, so fairly certain you will love your beast when it arrives

Ah great nice to hear! I've been on the fence regarding 1080p or 4k. But i honestly don't think I will benefit much from it other than slightly crisper graphics. I did have the 1070 in mind but chose the 1080 with future VR in mind. Glad to hear your enjoying your beast! Can't wait to get mine up and running soon ��..good to hear the screen is 75hz, I had seen that on other websites so nice to have confirmation on that. I used to have a 120hz monitor with my old rig and it definitely looks smoother but it's not a massive difference. I'm sure 75hz will be more than enough.

At lower frequencies, gsync makes a huge difference. My 4k setup is just 60 hz screen, and some bigger titles like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Witcher 3 go down to 45 fps, but with gsync I genuinely don't notice it. It's a fantastic technology.

I'm not sure how much better a screen can be when 17 inch, and if you did want ultra smooth, then using an external 4k display would probably be a better option. Plus your battery will last that bit longer and less heat generated as the system doesn't need to process so many pixels, so better longevity. That was my thinking when speccing.

I've got the 1080 with the 1080 screen and I don't regret it in the slightest. I doubt I would notice any difference with the 4k screen to be honest, however the fact that the refresh rate is higher at 75hz (with an easy overclock to 100hz I've read, warranty depending).... imo it's the perfect duo.

Having said that, lesser spec games will drive the 4k panel at 60hz without issue. Be careful though, there are queries about the 4k screen being G-Sync enabled. I'm not sure if people are struggling to configure it via the BIOS, it may not be enabled by default (although it should be).

For uni and going to be using it for gaming and dual monitor when in bed so streaming on one big screen and gaming on the laptop

I use Unity3d as well quite a lot I think ill just go for the lower res screen and see if I can stretch to a gtx 1080
Am I right in thinking you can remove the graphics cards?
