Hey guys,

Just a quick question.

Can anyone confirm if the octane chassis uses soldered component's or desktop sized component's?

simply put I'm basically confirmed my defiance three GPU is dying after months of trying to figure it out. and as the component's are soldered onto the board I'm look at more money than the remaining fiancé balance to repair it.

At two years old it is not worth repairing. So in the future when I purchase a new laptop I want to avoid this issue reoccurring.

All laptops use laptop graphics cards, some are soldered, some are modular. The octane has a modular card.

The octane also uses a desktop CPU which isn’t soldered.

It’s important to note that whilst it uses a modular graphics chip, that’s not to mean it’s upgradeable for 2 reasons:

1. Cost of laptop graphics cards are ludicrously expensive to the point you may as well buy a new system.
2. Upgrading graphics depends on weather the chassis fits the new card, not all mxm formats are the same, they’re chassis dependant, and requires a bios to support the new card.

Thanks for the response. I wasn't persay looking to upgrade it as im away your motherboard would a fixed size only able to take a fixed set of card types.

it was more reparability. as with a modular gpu it should be cheaper to repair/replace the gpu rather than the whole motherboard in my current case.

I think it depends a lot on how old the laptop is when (if) it needs repairing. So much of a laptop is built into (or designed for) the motherboard and chassis that with anything other than basic repairs it's often more sensible to buy a newer model of laptop. :)
