Nvidia Pascal

Thinking of getting a new laptop in time for uni this year. I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it likely PCS will get Pascal before September?
2. Will Pascal be more expensive than Maxwell? I'm on a tight budget and if a 1060 is going to be noticeable more expensive than a 960 then I'll probably just go for the 960.
3. Will Pascal even be useful for me? Because I'm not getting 4K or 3D screens or anything funky like that...

Pascal is due Q2 of this year but who knows if there will be delays. There is always something better coming out round the corner that will make what you purchase outdated but not obsolete. PCS may get before September unless there are delays with release and/or high demand, It will either be more expensive or possibly a similar price point with Maxwell dropping in price. If you are not doing anything 'funky' then the 960 should be fine for you, you can get it sooner or if you can wait, see if the price drops if Pascal arrives when planned.

Hi,

The next generation of Nvidia cards is going to be a revolution of design, new thinking and the template for cards in the future. There will be more and more support for processing on graphics chips and this is clearly in the thinking of the engineers at Nvidia.

When there is a complete new approach in technology it can mean teething problems and so there might be a few issues initially with the new cards but on the other hand the cards are going to do more than the current generation cards can do. As for the current generation of cards I think the 900 series are already amazing and will be delivering great performance for quite some time.

It appears that the AMD Polaris 14nm die shrink has gone better than expected and its reported to be shipping laptops with the AMD 400 series in April 2016, so if nvidia goes as well it is likely we will see Pascal mid 2016 , I am hoping that price will be about the same as Maxwell maybe 10% to 20% more at launch so they don't devalue Maxwell stock too quickly. Would definetely pay 20% more for twice the speed & lower watts/heat.

The problem with pascal is their price. They might be strong as hell, but they are literally costing a fortune, I'd say you should go with a 970 GTX and not 960.

How do you know? AFAIK there's been no mention of prices yet?

How long will it take PCSpecialist to release new laptops once nvidia have released the new pascal mobile gpus?

They're usually very quick, like within a couple of weeks. Clevo will be sent pre-release cards to build systems around, so they should be ready to go as soon as the card hits the market.

anyone has an idea if the i7 3770K @4.1 GHz would bottleneck Pascal graphics card?

My 670s in SLI are really getting to sweat with new titles now ... ;)

I shouldn't think so, the i7 should be more than powerful for the next few iterations of GPU. If anything the next gen GPU's will take some of the load off the CPU.
