Nvidia geforce gtx 960m vs. 970m

I have configured 2 laptops, a defiance 15" and a Optimus 15", and they have the same specs except the defiance has a nvidia geforce gtx 970m 3gb graphics card, while the Optimus has a 960m 2gb. The laptop is for schoolwork and gaming on newish games (such as COD BO3) and the defiance is about £100 more expensive. I have two main questions: will the gaming performance be significantly improved, and will the 970 with a 3GB last longer than a 960 with 2GB. Thanks for any answers.

you need to check benchmarks online, a better gpu will always help your laptop last longer for gaming, the vram wouldn't make a noticeable difference.

Short answer, yes. From what I've read on the internet the 960m in the range has been nobbled quite a bit by Nvidia, so defo go for the 970m.

Thanks, I'll probably go 970 in that case but do you know how long a 970 should last on average?

Currently the 970m is only second fiddle to the 980m. How long the gpu will last, is like asking how long a piece of string is ;) At 1080 it should do you just fine for a while yet, but that depends on what type of games you like to play and how many bells and whistles you want turning on or up to max. Drivers will improve over time, but are pretty good at the mo.

Have a look here to see how well it performs against other mobile gpu's: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.13849.0.html
Make sure you select to compare single gpu's.

A small note on vRAM. While more will not give you a better framerate it will have an effect. More and more modern games are using over 2GB of vRAM at higher settings. If a game wants to use more vRAM than is available then it will need to swap thing like textures in and out of the card causing stuttering. Worth noting although you seem to have already made up your mind on the 970m, which BTW I highly recommend going with online benchmarks.
