Next-Gen Console or Newer PC Parts?

Well I'm stuck in a hard place at the minute.

I've owned my PC for 4-5 years and the CPU isn't up to scratch so I've been looking to get a new mobo, new CPU and a CPU cooler.

But now with the next-gen consoles out I'm wondering if I should scrap the new PC parts which will cost me £300-£400 and just get either the Xbox One or the PS4.

I currently own a PS3 and I've owned Xbox 360's in the past, and if I'm honest I don't really play on my PS3 much, whereas my PC I'm on it everyday.

Obviously I probably wouldn't play the PS4/Xbox One much to start off with due to the lack of games that will be released with it, but as time progresses there will be titles I'll want on the PS4/Xbox One.

But at the same time my PC is starting to struggle get very hot due to it's age and the fact it has no CPU cooler, etc and I would like to play games at a higher FPS.

So which would you choose, if you were in my shoes?

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T upgraded to i5-4670K.
AMD Mobo upgraded to a intel mobo.
And buy a Hyper Evo 212 CPU Cooler.

-then either-

New case or a new platinum PSU.

No GPU upgrade, I only bought a Sapphire Vapor-X 7950 OC earlier this year, so GPU wise I'm fine.

Pc upgrades all the way :)

along with a new case, and a mid range psu :)

A few things from my perspective
- the fun of improving/building upon the PC that YOU have just built VS console that sits near tv, no improvements at all.
- Initial cost of PC build could be High VS 400 on a console..
- Initial cost of PC Games is relatively low VS High costs for Console games. Or buy pre owned, lol which is still less than PC gamers pay hahah.
- PC build is considerably more powerful than a console.
- PC Community VS Console kids :)

I know what i'd choose.

I pre ordered the XboxOne but then cancelled it because I wanted a (better) desktop computer than I currently own for processing my photos, so I thought to myself, "Why don't I game on it too?", so I cancelled my preorder and ordered a PC instead. (( I'll have it Monday :D ))

You can't upgrade a console whereas you can on a PC.

Money wise, you'll be paying more for the consoles than you would for PC parts.

To be honest, I'd upgrade your PC.

Yeah it's just games like Uncharted etc that don't come on PC that I'll miss lol.

But I know what you're all saying.

I was in a similar situation. I owned a ps3 and hardly played games on my pc. Now ive upgraded my pc and got older AAA games like Tomb Raider and Arkham City for far less than they would ever be on console.
I absolutely believe it was the right choice for me to get a gaming pc rather than a new console. Nowadays most big games come out on the pc as well, as for those exclusives you will almost always find an alternative that is just as good (Uncharted = Tomb Raider).

Spose I should keep saving for my PC parts then...

Or just go all out and keep saving to buy a brand new PC.

Having the same predicament, love PC so much but the only side I'm really really missing is the social one, sure PC can be a very social platform but I basically have no good friends to play with, where as the old xbox and ps3 days were some of my most enjoyable, also, the last forza I played was 2 and i've missed it so much..

I have people to play games with on my PC, but we mainly only play LoL, other then that I go solo or play singleplayer games.

The thing with consoles are they'll never really become outdated.. I can play on my Xbox 360 which is what? 6/7 years old? And it still feels like I'm playing on a perfectly capable console. Play games on your 6/7 year old PC and it's a different story.

Buy a console if you have friends on there and if you like console games. Upgrade/buy a new pc if you need something more than a gaming machine that can do anything you want and play specific sorts of games, albeit for a slightly higher cost but will have future potential to upgrade.

For those who say "you can't upgrade a console so it's poo", there's really no need to upgrade a console as most developers are building the game to the consoles spec, whereas PC users build their PC's to a games spec. Seriously if I hadn't started knit-picking when I bought my pc and discovered about 120hz and 1ms refresh rates and mechanical keyboards and mice with 8000dpi then I'd still be happily playing on my outdated xbox without a care in the world.

For £400 you do get a lot for your money in my opinion with a console.

Well for the new mobo, cpu and cpu cooler it's coming in at £307.70.

And I would imagine/hope that with the new pc parts it'd last another 5 years+.

Also would I need to buy a new Windows 7?

In the end it'll all depend on the games you want to play.

I completely agree with what Grimezy said, I don't understand that it's an argument about how you can upgrade your PC but you can't upgrade the console. You can't upgrade a console because well, you're not supposed to.

The + side of consoles is you never have to worry about "can my pc/laptop handle the new game coming out?" because it always will. All you have to pay for once you own the console are it's games. Much more expensive than PC games, yes, but at the same time never having to worry about requirements.

So if there are a lot of games you want to play that will only come out on consoles, then get a console. If majority of the games you'll want to play will come out on the PC, then spend it on your PC. Good luck either way! Unfortunately for me, there are only few games I want on console (Final Fantasy, NBA 2K series, Metal Gear, The Last of Us [here's hoping for a 2nd game for next gen], Gran Turismo), but I love these games so much that I will have to get a console at some point as substitutes will not do.
