New slimmed down Defiance

Supposedly the Max-Q tech will keep this cool (although at the expense of some GPU performance vs regular mobile Pascal cards) . I bet it still sounds like a pair of high-pitched hairdryers on steroids at peak load however. Still good to see this coming to market, will wait for a few reviews before putting it on the shopping list.....

Yeah but to be fair a laptop GPU is always a compromise on performance.

I note it has half the storage bays of its big brother.

Looks nice but my DII is still going strong so I see no need to upgrade any time soon.

I'm always put off by slim laptops for these reasons, storage and cooling. I will always go for bulky as hell but premium components. The only time I may reconsider this in current times is with the Razor laptops which are very impressively built (but you pay for it).

I gather the Q-Max GPUs do use a good deal less power. There's an outline / spec + comments on notebookcheck. I saw a laptop with one reviewed on Eurogamer and they seemed to find it fine, but then managed to stop short of posting actual temperature benchmarks..

I'd certainly be interested to see more about them.

is the Q-Max design from nVidia or Intel?

Interestingly I note they also have the option of 16GB or 32GB Optane storage.

I've yet to see any systems with this in or even see any benchmarks yet but 32GB at about 80 quid seems a bit of a no brainer.

Nope...not trying to convince myself. I have way too much life in mine yet. :)

Looking at the spec sheet for the Defiance XS, its only showing one M2 connection, which presumably would be taken up by the Optane memory if selected. Wonder whether this would mean no NVMe capability? Personally I like to have an NVMe boot drive but its not clear if NVMe can be selected as well as Optane.

My Defiance III is still fairly new, but I live by the maxim that "he who dies with the most toys, wins" so always interested in a newer, shinier model!

I expect it only has the 1 M.2 slot.

Adding a PM961 or a WD Blue M.2 and Optane to a spec brings up this when trying to proceed with the order:
  • We've checked your specification for compatibility. Please see our suggestions below:

  • Intel Optane memory is not compatible with an M.2 SSD. Please remove Intel Optane or the M.2 SSD from your order.
