New pc first use query

Hi all,

My pc is on its way to dpd and have been reading the guides etc but was unsure on a few things if anyone can chuck some advice please.

Am I right in thinking that the best way forward is to finish off the windows install, update windows as many times as needed, install any drivers etc, and then add the benchmarking apps and stress test the system ??
Then from there once happy do fresh install of windows and re apply all the updates and drivers?

Also i’d usually use Avast and malware bytes but it seems everyone believes defender is ample for AV … so in that case I’d be ok just to install malwarebytes and let defender do the rest?

Thanks for any info… seems minor but just wanna get it all straight in my head before even plugging it all in

I would just go straight to 'fresh install', I don't think its required to finish the out of the box windows experience (you obviously can, just to make sure it all turns on and functions if you like). Do any benchmarks you like and then get using the PC

Defender is definitely good enough on its own, I believe the current school of thought is even malwarebytes isn't required as such but occasionally running won't do any harm (others far more knowledgeable than I will hopefully add their thoughts to correct here)

It depends if you're ordering with or without windows.

If you order with windows, it comes fully setup, just go through the OOBE setup and get into windows, then you can install your benchmark software and test it.

If you order without windows, you'd need to clean install your own copy, no point going through the OOBE setup as @steaky360 says, just clean install straight away.

Malwarebytes is fine to have alongside defender, just make sure it's not including a trial or active subscription as that will enable the online scanner which will disable defender. You can only have one active scanner at a time otherwise they conflict and cause issues. Running free Malwarebytes just does on demand scanning so the scanner is never live as such, so works really well alongside Defender as a backup scan.

Typically had my dpd email today and delivery is due 3.35 - 4.45 ….. I start work at 3 😩😩
Might have to get up early tomoz to get it all up and running before work then 😁😁
My next decision is whether to stick with office from 2007 that I’ve never actually had a problem with (and has publsher) or start paying for 365 where my daughter can also install if I get the family edition ….. swaying to the free option of sticking with what I’ve got if I’m honest 😂😂

You can still get standalone modern versions of office so only have to pay a one off fee, you can also get a student discount using your daughters email
